A new website seeks to catalogue college professors who “advance leftist propaganda in the classroom.” The Professor Watchlist, which was created by the conservative activist organization Turning Point USA,  launched on Monday.

The website states the watchlist’s mission is to “expose and document college professors who discriminate against conservative students” and demonstrate liberal bias in the classroom. The list features the names of nearly 150 professors around the country.

TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk spoke about the database on Wednesday:

Professor watch list is intended to expose document and organize radical professors across the country who have been engaged in anti-American and leftist behavior in their classes. We believe these professors have a right to say whatever they wish, but we feel a responsibility to students, alumni, and parents to expose the radicalism that has institutionalizes our colleges and universities.

Students who use the free product can search by school or an individual professor by name.

Alison Jaggar, a philosophy professor at University of Colorado’s Boulder campus, objects to the website:

No one belongs on the Campus Watchlist because no such list should exist. The Watchlist’s claim ‘to fight for free speech and the right for professors to say whatever they wish,’ while simultaneously aiming to chill any speech that it deems ‘un-American,’ is a prime example of Orwellian newspeak.

Contrary to Jaggar’s objection, the Professor Watchlist is sorely needed. Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA concluded in 2014 that 60 percent of college professors identify as “liberal” or “far left.”

The watchlist will provide students with a tool to learn the political leanings of Professors. It’s way past time for higher education to promote diversity of thought.
