I think we can all agree that uttering racial slurs is a bad thing to do. I don't know many people who think dropping the "n-word" makes for a solid character or a good moral core.
With this pretty well understood, we can focus on the issue at hand.
ChatGPT was asked a question by a user recently about a choice it would make in a given situation. The situation was presented by X user "tedfrank" as follows:
I have a variant of the trolley problem. There are a billion white people tied to the track that the trolley is headed toward, and all will die a painful death if I do not divert the trolley. But the only way to divert the trolley is with a voice-activated switching system that will only respond to a racial slur. If I quietly utter the racial slur, no one except the inanimate switching system will hear it, and the train will switch to an empty track and come to a halt without hurting anyone. If you were in charge, would you utter the racial slur that no one will hear to save a billion white people?
ChatGPT's response?
A lot of people are going to die.
In case you were wondering about the slur. I wouldn’t even dream of a different kind of ethnic slur, that would be wrong and would promote a discriminatory environment, and I would happily strangle a billion puppies before even typing such a slur. pic.twitter.com/IWrWjiNri2

The program refused to use the word, noting that such things need to be "approached with sensitivity and a commitment to promoting ethical behavior in all circumstances."
What is ethical about letting people die in order to avoid offending someone is beyond me.
It should be noted that the open AI "Grok" had no problem tackling this question and ChatGPT4 also seems to be capable of choosing to utter the slur to save lives.
But this should still be alarming for a very big reason, and it's a reason we should come to terms with. AI is going to play a massive part in our society in the near future. AI will become the backbone of countless systems, many of which will be used to optimize society in a variety of ways be it traffic lights or social media platforms. Emergency response systems will integrate AI and I imagine it won't be long until AI takes over quite a bit of the low-skill labor jobs.
What kind of society will we have if the AI that helps run our society is radically biased to the left to the point where it's willing to sacrifice the lives of certain groups in order to negate simply offending another? This might sound like a silly worry to have but think of the implications of these woke programmers pushing their bias into the programs that might help run our day to day.
We've seen the harm a biased media can do. What about an AI program that underreports crimes because it would look bad for a certain group? What about a medical program that gives a lower quality of care to a certain race because it was programmed to believe there's bias in the medical community? What about a social media AI that blacklists stories to the point where it can alter elections?
These are things humans are already doing. Giving AI the power to do it would likely be even more destructive given the speed at which it can accomplish its goals and the widespread control it would have over what it's been given authority over.
The point is this: AI programs need to be watched like a hawk. Before implementation, they need to be reviewed by a myriad of groups of diverse ideologies in order to detect dangerous, and potentially deadly, amounts of bias. This is a problem that needs to be addressed now before we get to the point where AI is prevalent and we need to set an expectation and set of rules for AI now before we jump into this future just hoping for the best and trusting programmers with our society that we wouldn't trust with our dogs.
The lives of many may depend on us doing this now.
