There’s a serious lack of self-awareness among the Hollywood elite and this is causing the world to tune out when it comes to listening to them.

As I wrote on Monday, Sunday’s Academy Awards saw a massive ratings drop of 20 percent, continuing a pattern of sinking viewership that has gone on for some time when it comes to celebrity award shows. While it’s true that the age of the internet allows you to tune out and view the highlights online later, the fact that these celebrities have gone into the deep end when it comes to political commentary is a large part of why America is tuning out.

We have several pieces of evidence to support this theory. For one, we can look at the fall and rise of viewership for the NFL, which took a massive hit in the ratings when players were following Colin Kaepernick’s lead and taking the opportunity to make political statements. Once the NFL did away with these displays and the focus returned to the sport, viewership has increased.

The other is the way the country responded to comedian Ricky Gervais when he hosted the Golden Globes earlier this year. Gervais shoved Hollywood’s elitism and ignorance back in its face with a line that echoed throughout the internet for weeks afterward.

“If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg,” Gervais famously said. “So if you win, come up, accept your award, thank your agent, thank your God, and f— off.”

Gervais was celebrated up and down for his direct assault on the elite, but it would appear that the elite weren’t listening. During Sunday’s Oscars ceremonies, political speeches and displays were a dime a dozen. Gervais, seemingly noting the rating crash, took to Twitter and splashed some more reality on the gilded coastals.

“I have nothing against the most famous people in the world using their privileged, global platform to tell the world what they believe. I even agree with most of it. I just tried to warn them that when they lecture everyday, hard working people, it has the opposite effect. Peace,” tweeted Gervais.

The Hollywood denizens would do well to listen to Gervais, but it doesn’t appear that they’re going to listen. Their ideological bubble is thick and not broken easily. This was proved on Sunday as Brad Pitt noted that John Bolton didn’t get 45 seconds to speak as he did, and at one point, the Communist Manifesto was quoted.

The viewership will continue to fall, but beneath that ratings crash will be the underlying issue that America is just done being preached to by rich elitists who have no idea what it’s like to live in the real world.
