Rumors are flying that Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) may have reached the end of his 2020 aspirations and will duck out of the race for the White House as he’s now scheduled a press conference Monday afternoon around 4:00 pm EST from his campaign headquarters in Dunbar, California.

According to The Hill, Swalwell has been struggling to gain any traction in the polls and only barely scraped by with the minimum requirements to get on the debate stage in June. As the fall will require much higher levels of approval, Swalwell’s chances are looking dismal. Rumors of his exit were only stoked when he abruptly canceled two days of campaign events in New Hampshire.

What’s more, Swalwell already indicated that if he can’t make a splash among the slew of Democrat contenders, he’d bow out according to The Hill:

The four-term congressman has previously said that he could opt to run for reelection to his House seat if his presidential campaign doesn’t gain traction, telling The Hill last month that he had not closed the door on seeking a fifth term in the House.

“I’m running for president right now. Don’t have to make that decision [on the House race] until December,” Swalwell told The Hill. “We need this field to start shrinking so candidates can distinguish themselves. I hope to be part of the field as it shrinks. If I don’t, I’m going to be realistic about my options.”

Not that Swalwell had a chance, to begin with. He both acts and looks like a mannequin come to life and manages to meet almost every stereotype of the robotic politician who says what he feels will make him popular. This is on top of the fact that the guy managed to make his central issue one that Democrats are typically hurt by. While the anti-gun left may be loud, proud, and heavily funded, the majority of Americans just aren’t on board with giving up their firearms.

Besides, with heavy hitters like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris currently in a slug-fest for the top spot, no one will want to look at a small-time California politician who only makes headlines when he says something wildly ridiculous. Swalwell was an afterthought from the get-go and will fade back into obscurity once he inevitably drops out of the race, be it today or the near future.
