Democrats are so focused on pushing forward their own agenda that they don’t seem to be concerned about the security crisis currently happening down on the border.
According to the Daily Caller, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was immediately silenced by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) once she began speaking about the problems happening down on the border according to reports by White House officials. This was later confirmed by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
“Once the secretary started, Schumer interrupted her and didn’t want to hear it,” McCarthy told reporters.
The Daily Caller reported that Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) both silenced Nielsen and began speaking about their own plans, none of which involved addressing the security issues with the border:
The White House official told TheDC that both Pelosi and Schumer refused to hear out Nielsen’s briefing and instead advocated for two solutions to end the government shutdown. Neither of the Democratic options would provide the additional funding for border security requested by The White House.
“Democrats in the room either don’t care that there is a humanitarian crisis on the border or just prefer ignorance. It was incredibly disheartening that they don’t want to know the facts when making policy,” DHS Spokeswoman Katie Waldman said in a statement to TheDC.
Nielsen’s briefing was supposed to help make lawmakers aware of the mounting problems happening at the southern border right now due to the migrant caravan that is continuously attempting to enter into the U.S., and would have helped Democratic leaders understand that severity of the problem, however, Democrat lawmakers seem far more concerned about reopening the government.
Just last December, Pelosi hinted that she’d shut down the government forever if it meant President Donald Trump never got the funding for his border wall, however, as I highlighted previously, the Democrats are going to find themselves on the lower end of an uphill battle, as the part in the White House is usually the winner of these shutdown battles.
Trump is already putting the blame for the shutdown on the Democrats, and while several polls show America blames Trump for the shutdown, it’s not clear whether or not they think it’s a good thing, as many on the right believe it is, and approve of Trump’s shutdown move.
Interestingly enough, Schumer indicated in the past that he understood border walls were a good thing and that illegal immigration was wrong. He seems to have changed his mind now that Democrats have entered into a “resist Trump at all costs” holding pattern.
