Beto O’Rourke put up a very well publicized and media supported fight against Republican Ted Cruz, but it looks as if O’Rourke is going to lose his campaign for a seat in the U.S. Senate.
Despite his best efforts, Texans just don’t seem to want his coastal values and aren’t as affected by his skateboarding in a Whataburger parking lot as he’d hoped. Some were very affected, however. Some of O’Rourke’s fans decided to get together and celebrate his media built celebrity with song and dance in order to convince Texans how cool and electable he is in a last-ditch effort to pump his flagging numbers up.
The problem for O’Rourke, however, is that these ads may have actually hurt him more than helped him. The ads are so cringe-worthy that it makes Ted Cruz look like the coolest guy in the room.
Take this ad made by a group called “Esther’s Follies,” hailed as the “SNL of Austin.” According to YouTube channel Originator Studios, this sketch was wildly popular on the stage, and the group decided to make it into a skit for the screen. I’m very glad I got that explanation because I honest-to-God couldn’t tell if this was an ad for or against O’Rourke when I first saw it.
Watch as these ladies try to pull off a Grease-esque knockoff called “Betomaniac!”
“As a proud, native born Texan, I would like to formally apologize for this,” said one YouTube commenter. “These residents of the City of Austin do not represent us and, along with the entire city of Austin, are a cancerous blight upon our great state. The saying “Keep Austin Weird” should really be “Keep Austin Away”.”
“I was going to vote for him, but after seeing this I’m voting for Lyin ted instead,” said another.
The video is bad enough that as of this writing it has 142 downvotes as opposed to 106 upvotes. Even if you are a fan of O’Rourke, I’m not sure this is something you’d want to show your friends and family as a way to convince others to vote for him.
But as horrific as that was to watch, I’m not sure how it stacks up to this next one.
This was made without the help of professional studios and what I assume were comedians. It was just a community of O’Rourke voters who got together to create a song and dance number for their candidate. In normal circumstances, I’d consider this far less cringe-worthy. Fans getting together to make a video without professional help can be endearing.
However, in this case, it just comes off as weak propaganda. The central character here is a little girl who has no idea what’s going on, only that people are dancing and that she wants to dance too. Around her are people trying their best to dance along with a woman who I can assume choreographed the dance number to the Village People’s “YMCA,” only she exchanged some of the lyrics to be a pro-B-E-T-O support song that also takes a swipe at Cruz.
Not since the Clinton days have I seen a more awkward attempt at making a pro-Democrat celebratory video. Trust me, you’re not going to enjoy this, but you won’t be able to look away either.

So long as Democrats continue to make horrible videos that support candidates like this, the Republican is safe.
