WikiLeaks Founder Says They are Currently Attempting to Get Trump's Tax Returns

WikiLeaks threw the entire DNC into chaos when it hacked into its emails and released sensitive, and very volatile information to the public, resulting in resignations and party turmoil galore.

But what about Trump? Would Julian Assange attack the Republicans too?

The answer to that came during an interview with Julian Assange on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher.” During the interview, Maher was running defense for Clinton against Assange’s DNC email leaks. Hilariously, Maher tried to run a narrative that there wasn’t anything within the leaks that could really point to the DNC trying to undermine Sanders’ campaign.

“Well, I don’t know if that’s really true. I read those emails. There was no smoking gun.” said Maher.

“I do.” countered Assange with no hesitation. “I know that it’s true.”

Assange then went into an explanation of how the DNC attempted to paint Sanders supporters as violent, which did not sit well with Maher, who attempted to paint Assange as a partisan hack working with Putin.

“Why haven’t we seen anything hacked from the Trump campaign. Obviously, we know these came from Russia, and we also know you do not like Hillary Clinton at all, as does not Vladimir Putin,” said Maher. “So it looks like you are working with a bad actor – Russia – to put your thumb on the scale and basically f*ck with the one person who stands in the way of us being ruled by Donald Trump.”

Maher’s audience does what it does, and erupted in cheers and clapping to make Maher’s points seem more hard-hitting than they actually are. And Maher’s accusation of partisanship was deflated when Assange pointed out that Maher had donated $1 million to Obama’s campaign. A fact that Maher was proud of.

Apparently, you’re only allowed to be partisan if you’re doing so for Democrats. Regardless, Maher asked the question many have been waiting to get an answer to.

“Why don’t you hack into Donald Trump’s tax returns?” asked Maher.

“Well, we’re working on it,” said Assange to much applause.

WikiLeaks later said in a tweet that what Assange said was just a joke, stating they aren’t actually trying to acquire Trump’s tax returns, just “encouraging whistleblowers.”

Whether this tweet is meant to cover Assange’s tracks publicly or not remains to be seen. When Assange said his organization was working on it, he didn’t look jocular the least.

Trump’s unwillingness to release his tax returns has made people more than a little curious to see them. Given the opportunity, WikiLeaks would more than likely release them if acquired.
