Not that anybody in Trump Train would care. In fact I hear them quite often shouting from the parapets that the media is the should be brought to heel because it doesn’t treat “Glorious Leader” with the majestic regality he deserves.
This is false, of course. Fox News can’t mention Trump’s name without giggling like a schoolgirl with a crush, and NBC’s coverage of his orangeness is 21 times more positive than negative.
Still, in a recent interview, Roger Stone made a very interesting comment while on XM Patriot’s Breitbart News. As pulled into a video by *sigh* Media Matters, Stone goes on to tell the host what Trump should do to outlets like CNN.
“When Donald Trump is president, he should turn off their FCC license.” said Stone.
The response by NYMag.com of all places tells you why this is worrisome.
“The context for this threat is that Trump previously denounced coverage in the WashingtonPost, implicitly threatening to go after the paper’s owner on antitrust and tax issues as retribution for the Post’s coverage. Now Stone is making in a completely undisguised fashion the threat Trump made in a barely disguised fashion.”
The owner in question is Jeff Bezos, on whom Trump said “…he’s using that as a tool for political power against me and against other people. And I’ll tell you what: We can’t let him get away with it.”
So with Trump, his BFF, and his quasi-religious following all screaming for the scalps of the media that dared to oppose them, it’s up in the air just how safe any outlet is, including this one. Furthermore, it makes one wonder how safe the 1st amendment is with Trump at the helm.
Furthermore, where are the Republicans on this? I thought constitutionalism was their thing.
The scary part of this, and I admittedly say this as a reporter, is that anyone reporting the news would have to watch what they say when speaking about Trump. If it’s not positive, or in any way harmful to him, it would appear that Trump will have his revenge, and people will be just fine with that.
Admittedly, there are times when I wouldn’t mind if certain news organizations burned to the ground and were never heard from again. Salon and their friendliness towards pedophilia comes to mind. Regardless of how much I might hate these places, I don’t want them to be silenced due to some vindictive man in office. I want them to be silenced because the people complain to their sponsors who then withdraw.
The free market should decide the fate of news outlets, not Donald Trump.
