It was a shortened but busy week in the press with several topics springing up that led to dysfunction on display. Deportation continued to deliver dysphoria, presidential pardons created paradoxes, and Elon Musk reaching his expiration date with DOGE delivered deceptive interpretations of him “quitting," being “fired," and other slanted takes on the facts.
What is going to be an ongoing case of self-immolation in the press is that even in light of massive exposure to the public of their practices and lack of standards, they refuse to course correct. There was a clear intent to outdo each other, so let’s start mucking around in the media swamps and see who took top (bottom) honors this week.
THE CONTENDERS
PBS – The network joined in with NPR and decided to bring a lawsuit against President Trump concerning his effort to defund public broadcasters. While insisting they are a neutral, down-the-middle outlet, at the same time, they felt it was a clever idea to produce a special on excessive presidential executive power. In a “PBS News Hour” segment, the panel argued both against Trump cutting spending AND for increasing the deficit. PBS President Paula Kerger spoke with Katie Couric on how defunding would close down stations (which defies the “only 3 percent of funding is from taxpayers”). Hostess Christiane Amanpour spoke to Harvard’s Kennedy School graduates, and compared President Trump to Mussolini.
CNN – After weeks of promoting his book, Jake Tapper suffered massive drops in his ratings. He later said it is “silly” to suggest he wrote the book in order to make money. Brian Stelter declared defunding public broadcasting is censorship, after he proposed stripping Fox News from cable systems. Brian also demanded Elon Musk respond to a “specific” NY Times piece that was based on anonymous sources delivering rumors. The reporter behind the infamous “mostly peaceful” riots reporting dared to honor the anniversary of the riots. Abby Phillip mocked MAGA over Scott Pelley’s speech, where he didn’t mention Trump by name - as she went on to mention it was all about Trump.
Washington Post – Jonathan Capehart revealed his quitting the WaPo editorial board over…an agreement?! In an op-ed, it was racially insensitive to say new Dept. of Defense merit standards would impact minorities. There was this amusingly inept attempt to impugn Tom Homan over his business past. The paper declared that the wealthy, white elitist fashion publisher Anna Wintour is the face of DEI policies.
MSNBC – Joe Scarborough shamed himself over his past praise of Biden. Jen Psaki complained about Trump taking Memorial Day off - after defending Biden for doing the same. Jen also had a bad show when all of her segments were based on misinformation. Michael Steele was among those contradicting his position on pardons. He also was upset over deportations, something he had been unbothered about in the Biden years. The network’s FBI “expert” was upset to learn the FBI will be investigating crimes.
