THE ESSEX FILES: Jimmy Kimmel's Christmas Lecture on Tyranny Rings Hollow

Townhall Media

Jimmy Kimmel chose Christmas Day to deliver Britain's Alternative Christmas Message on Channel 4, a slot traditionally reserved for counterpoints to the king's address. There, the late-night host declared that "tyranny is booming" in America under President Donald Trump, framing the United States as sliding toward fascism while portraying Trump as a would-be king. Kimmel's remarks came with a dose of sarcasm.

He joked about his own brief suspension earlier this year from ABC, calling the public backlash a victory for free speech in a supposedly oppressive nation. He even taunted Trump directly, implying the president's complaints about late-night comedy had backfired by keeping his show on the air. The irony is so thick it's impossible to miss. Kimmel broadcasts from a country where free expression remains robust, even for relentless critics of the president.

Late-night hosts like Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Myers, and Jon Stewart have spent years targeting Trump without facing government censorship or legal repercussions for their monologues. Political speech, no matter how sharp — and sometimes cruel and hateful — enjoys strong protection under the First Amendment.

Contrast that with the nation hosting Kimmel's message. In the United Kingdom, police make thousands of arrests annually for online communications deemed grossly offensive or menacing under laws like the Malicious Communications Act (1988) and the Communications Act (2003).

Reports from 2024 and 2025 show forces logging over 12,000 such arrests in recent years, often for social media posts that cause "anxiety" or offend sensitivities. High-profile cases include comedy writer Graham Linehan, detained over tweets, and others cautioned for memes or critical comments. British authorities have defended these actions as enforcing existing statutes, but critics across the political spectrum argue they chill open debate. On the flip side, the First Amendment in the U.S. gives robust protection to speech — even speech many people find offensive, hateful, or downright shocking.

And that’s why you don’t see statistical data for “speech arrests” in America — there’s no national tally because they’re so uncommon. When people do get busted over online comments, it’s usually for things like repeated harassment, stalking, or actual terroristic threats, not simply for having a nasty opinion or a mean tweet.

When citizens risk arrest for a harshly worded post, warnings about tyranny from abroad carry less weight. Kimmel's platform allows him to mock the president nightly, renew his contract through 2027, and deliver international speeches decrying authoritarianism. Americans elected Trump twice, and the system has functioned through challenges, including media scrutiny that predominantly leans left. Also, no U.S. comedian like Kimmel has faced arrest for monologues or tweets — his brief corporate suspension was reversed amid backlash. If anything, the UK exemplifies the kind of speech policing Kimmel decries, making his lecture to Britons ring hollow.

Celebrity complaints about electoral outcomes do not equate to tyranny; they reflect a healthy, if contentious, constitutional republic. If Kimmel truly is worried about eroding freedoms, he might examine closer examples of speech policing in the United Kingdom. Here, comedians thrive on controversy without fear of midnight knocks. That distinction matters when lecturing others on liberty.
