Former Vice President Dick Cheney has passed away at the age of 84. According to a statement from his family, he died of complications related to pneumonia and pre-existing cardiovascular disease. Cheney had an extensive history of heart issues, receiving a heart transplant in 2012.
"Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed," his family said in a statement obtained by Fox News. "The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease."
Cheney spanned the gamut in Washington. He spent over a decade in Congress before leaving the body in 1989 to serve as Secretary of Defense under then-President George H.W. Bush. Throughout the 1990s, he became the CEO of Halliburton, something his Democrat opponents would continually vilify him for after he rose to become vice president in the George W. Bush administration.
After his final term ended, Cheney's deep involvement in the Iraq War and his foreign policy views in general would go on to greatly muddy his relationship with the Republican Party. That divide would only grow after he became an outspoken critic of now-President Donald Trump.
Cheney was born in Nebraska but grew up in Wyoming, where he returned after leaving Washington. He attended the University of Wyoming and was elected to Congress in 1978. His career was capped by what many consider the most powerful vice presidential terms in history.
