With the indictment of James Comey for false statements and obstruction of justice has come a wave of wailing and gnashing of teeth from the national press. If all you watch is MSNBC, CNN, or the broadcast networks, you'd think history began on January 20th, 2025, with the swearing in of Donald Trump for his second term.
READ: DOJ Announces Two-Count Indictment of James Comey
Of course, the rest of us remember the last decade of malicious indictments against various Democratic Party political opponents, beginning with Michael Flynn and ending with Trump himself. Between those two were dozens of questionable prosecutions that almost certainly never would have occurred had those people not been in the orbit of the now-current president.
So it's a bit rich to hear anyone on the left, including the press that backed every single one of those prosecutions, suddenly complain about the "independence" of the Department of Justice. But amid all the hypocritical caterwauling, pay attention to what's not being said. Let's use Ken Dilanian, also known as "Fusion Ken" for his role in being a conduit for Fusion GPS during the Russia-gate hoax, as the perfect example.
The filing of felony charges based on a five-year-old statement to Congress, against a man whom Trump has identified as one of his chief political enemies, underscores the extent to which Trump has shattered the post-Watergate norm that the Justice Department would operate…

What I am hearing from DoJ sources:

The Comey indictment is among the worst abuses in DOJ history. Shocking. It’s hard to overstate how a big a moment this is.
The first tell is Dilanian's mention of a "five-year-old statement." That is an obvious deflection, meant to suggest that this is not that big of a deal, and that the Trump administration should have let bygones be bygones. Of course, that ignores the fact that until now, there was no chance for Comey to be indicted because he was allied with the Biden White House. That makes the age of the statement rather immaterial, given the circumstances.
As for the idea of offering any grace to Comey, he showed absolutely none to his ideological opponents over the years. That includes cheerleading one of the indictments of Trump as a "good day." He also went on MSNBC to theorize how the president would be imprisoned, suggesting he be put in a "trailer near the fence."
June 2024. Comey describes how he'd like to see Trump imprisoned:

“They would just put him in a double wide somewhere out near the fence, out in the grass. He’d eat there, shower there, he’d exercise there. He’d be away from general population, but it's obviously doable." pic.twitter.com/i6XEIzcktm
Let's address the idea that the DOJ was "independent" until now, with the White House having no influence on any of the obviously politicized prosecutions that took place under Biden. Did you know that Nathan Wade of the Fani Willis Georgia indictment against Trump visited the White House twice during the probe to meet with White House counsel? Did you also know that he "could not recall" the details of those meetings when answering questions about them under oath? I'd challenge any member of the press to explain that. They won't, of course, because it counters their DOJ "independence" narrative.
We likewise know that a DOJ official left the Biden administration to join the prosecution of Trump in New York. Was that just a coincidence, too? Dilanian kept posting, though, making this claim on Friday.
When Donald Trump was indicted, President Biden carefully avoided commenting on it. Quite a contrast with the way President Trump is celebrating the Comey indictment—after publicly directing his attorney general to make it happen.

Notably, Biden went so far as saying, "We gotta lock him up," speaking of Trump before the 2024 election.
Regardless, I want to return to what's not being said. Notice that in all of Dilanian's crying, he never once simply says that Comey didn't lie. That's a trend that is being repeated across the mainstream press. All of the complaints center on process, with almost no discussion of whether Comey actually lied or not. Because if he did, and the evidence to show that exists, then that's all that matters.
Everything else is cope. Democrats were warned what would happen if they broke glass on going full-bore at their political opponents with the justice system. They not only broke glass, but they also ground the glass into dust. The consequences of that are that they will no longer get the benefit of the doubt when the dynamics of power shift. Well, they've shifted, and those historical norms no longer exist. Comey richly deserves what he's getting.
