Season Opener Between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese Gets Nasty, and One Big Question Arises

In what may be the most-watched regular season game of the 2025 WNBA season, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese faced off in the league's season opener, and things got nasty.

The game itself turned out to be a no-doubt blowout, with Clark's Indiana Fever absolutely dragging the Chicago Sky 93-58. Reese's comically bad play was a big part of her team's loss, and that storyline was magnified by a "flagrant" foul that wasn't, an attempted fight, and a series of embarrassing moments.

I guess the refs felt the need to keep things tight given the eyes that were on them, but on no planet is that a mundane attempted strip a "flagrant" foul, and I guess Reese took lessons on flopping from Lebron James. But for her to then jump up and act like she had just been assaulted makes the situation even dumber. At one point, she raised her fist as if she wanted to throw a punch, and then did the "hold me back" trope by repeatedly acting as if she was going to go after Clark. I'm not sure what trying to take her shirt off was going to accomplish either, but hey, whatever.

That wouldn't have been so bad, though, had Reese's play the rest of the game backed up her attitude. Instead, she created another low-light reel of missed lay-ups. Every time Clark got near her, bricks were thrown.

I know we joke about the WNBA's quality of play being sub-par, but this is bad. How do you get to that level, play an entire year in the league, and still not be able to make a lay-up consistently? Maybe Reese starting that podcast and trying to become an influencer wasn't such a great idea.

And I know someone will read this and tell me about her defensive abilities (which weren't present during this game), but come on. With her size, there's no excuse for Reese to be missing shots in the paint the way she does, and at some point, one big question needs to be asked: What if she's just not that good?

I know that would be a disaster for the WNBA because they are banking on Clark vs. Reese being a marquee match-up for years to come, but currently, the latter looks like she couldn't hack it in a men's weekend league at the YMCA. Making headlines isn't making buckets, and eventually, Reese's star appeal is going to fade.

Back to Clark, she threw a little shade in her post-game interview after improving to 5-1 against Reese since joining the WNBA.

CLARK: It's just a good take foul. You know, either Angel gets a wide open two points, or we send them to the free throw line. Nothing malicious about it. It's a good take foul. Every basketball player knows that.

In hindsight, perhaps it was a bit presumptuous for Clark to assume Reese would make a wide-open two-point shot. Lesson learned, I guess.
