AOC's Solution to the Border Crisis May Be the Dumbest Thing I've Ever Heard

There have been a lot of bad takes regarding the border crisis over the last several years, but leave it to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to drop perhaps the dumbest "solution" to the problem I've ever heard.

While appearing on "The Daily Show," a journalistic bastion if there ever was one, Ocasio-Cortez decided to let it be known that the real way to "fix" the border is to "document people."

AOC's solution to the border crisis:

"You can either fix it by trying to build a wall. Or you can fix it by documenting people."

OCASIO-CORTEZ From all parts of the political spectrum, one of the biggest issues that we have when it comes to immigration is the fact that we have an undocumented population. Now, you can fix that by trying to build a wall, or you can fix that by trying to document people and create a path to citizenship (wild applause).
And, um, we'll have folks that might say, "Look at these systems," you know, that our shelter system has weight and things like that, but one of the reasons our public systems experience weight is because people don't have a documented and reliable path to work and sustain themselves just like all of our ancestors did and our grandparents and great-grand parents from all parts of the political spectrum.

According to the esteemed congresswoman, the issue of millions of people flooding over the border illegally can be easily solved by simply handing out documented status. Isn't that what we are already doing, though? Joe Biden's catch-and-release policy allows illegal immigrants to enter the interior of the country. Some outlets have even reported that work authorizations are being given out.

Regardless of the specifics, Ocasio-Cortez's suggestion still makes no sense. It's like saying you are going to fix your toilet by burning down your house. I mean, I guess your toilet ceases to be a problem at that point, but now you've got no house. If you start giving legal work authorization to every illegal immigrant who crosses the border, then you are ceding the idea of having a border at all, which is exactly what Democrats want.

Of course, even if one is dumb enough to consider that a solution, the problem still wouldn't be solved. All such a system would do is invite most of humanity to migrate to America. The border crisis would deepen even further, and you'd never be able to staff enough administrators to even hand out the magic work authorizations Ocasio-Cortez wants.

The biggest problem at the border remains the incentives that are drawing people to cross it illegally. If you build a wall and stop catch-and-release, illegal immigrants will mostly stop coming because the dangerous, expensive journey will no longer be worth it. If you start "documenting people," those incentives only intensify.

Honestly, things are so bad that even building a wall would likely result in little change. The only thing that is going to stop the onslaught of illegal immigration is asylum reform that stops people from crossing the border and immediately claiming asylum, thereby requiring that their claim is adjudicated. To do that, a policy of detention and quick decision-making must be put in place. If enough people are denied and sent back, those that haven't come yet will get the message.

What Ocasio-Cortez is suggesting is the full-scale destruction of American sovereignty, and even then, it wouldn't "fix" anything. I guess that shouldn't surprise me.
