The border is currently in crisis, as illegal immigration continues to break new records. From the harm done to American citizens to the humanitarian disaster affecting the illegal immigrants themselves, it’s hard to imagine how things could get worse.

Yet, the Biden administration has been trying its best to escalate what is already an unprecedented, completely out of control situation. Title 42, the provision that allows deportation based on the current pandemic, was set to be lifted on Monday, May 23rd, with a wave of further border crossings to follow.

Fortunately, that catastrophe has been averted, at least for a little while. A federal judge granted a preliminary injunction on Friday blocking the Biden administration’s move, which means Title 42 will stay in place for now.

It’s insane that the administration is even attempting to lift the provision, given how dire things are. The Border Patrol is completely overwhelmed and has been rendered largely ineffective, not because of their performance, but because of policy decisions. The states and cities most affected, i.e. those on the border, do not have the capacity or resources to take care of the illegal immigrants coming across. Federal facilities are completely overloaded and are turning into houses of hell. Further, the government has the ability to keep Title 42 in place as long as they wish, especially since COVID-19 infections remain a factor, at least by the administration’s own narrative.

Why in the world would Biden and his handlers want to pour gasoline on what is already a fiery inferno? It’s inexplicable–unless you assume they want to destroy the nation’s borders and institutions. That’s probably a good assumption at this point.

But while Title 42 is staying in place, no one should see it as much of a victory. As Fox News’ Bill Melugin notes, the explosion in numbers is still completely unworkable.

There’s a long way to go yet in this fight, and the administration seems intent on causing a complete collapse at the border. But even if it only prevents things from getting that much worse, Title 42 remaining in place is a welcome development. The next step is making Democrats pay at the ballot box for what they’ve done and continue to do.
