If you haven’t heard, the FBI is finally doing an internal review of the Michael Flynn case. This after years of evidence mounted that the case was handled in a corrupt fashion, from it being pursued in the first place, to how the interview itself was conducted, to how Mueller’s team threatened Flynn’s family to extract a guilty plea.

All it took was the case not only falling apart in stunning public fashion, but the FBI being drug kicking and screaming to release information that Wray has known about for years. The idea that the latest events were his first look into how the Obama administration operated and how the 302s were edited doesn’t begin to pass the smell test. He knew, which is why he fought so hard to keep it all secret.

Of course, none of this matters now, because Wray has only decided to make a move after everyone involved, including members of the former special counsel, have left government. Nothing that comes from this review will actually hold those accountable who so thoroughly abused their power.

What we will end up with is yet another stern letter, some new checkboxes on the relevant forms, and everyone still collecting their pensions. That’s what this review really is. It’s a CYA for Wray that he refused to even partake in until he essentially had no choice. I’d guess that AG Bill Barr had to make him even take this step.

What he should be doing is criminally investigating James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, and a range of Obama era officials. But government always protects government and Wray is nothing if not a company man.

While we’ll continue to get platitudes about how Wray is “doing a great job” from Barr, the truth is that his tenure has been just a continuation of the self-dealing that went on at the FBI under Comey. This review isn’t going to change anything. It’s just another slap in the face of justice.
