Sometimes I think about getting more involved in politics outside of writing. Then I’m reminded of just how much time you have to spend begging for money, oftentimes from people who don’t have it to spare, and I’m not sure I could be that guy.

Enter Elizabeth Warren, who apparently decided to take shamelessness in fundraising to a whole new level.

A young girl came up to me tonight and said, “I’m a broke college student with a lot of student loan debt. I checked and I have $6 in the bank—so I just gave $3 to keep you in this fight.” We’re staying in this fight for the people who are counting on us. pic.twitter.com/AetWhpTJqT

Not only did she accept $3 from a college student who had $6 to her name, she went on TV to brag about it. Whichever advisor approved this story being told should be fired. A Democrat taking almost all of someone’s money in order to waste it on a vanity project isn’t exactly new ground, but Warren’s use of this story as a way to prop up her campaign is a huge gaffe.

Any normal person would have handed this girl a twenty and told her to go knock doors instead. The last thing any candidate should be doing if made aware (and to be fair to others, candidates typically don’t know), is happily taking money from someone who is dead broke. This is a story so nuts that I think it would actually be better if she were just making it up.

And look, it’d be bad enough if her campaign was doing well. But Warren’s campaign is over and she just doesn’t want to admit it yet. There is absolutely no path for her to get the nomination after cratering in New Hampshire last night. (See: What the Heck Is Elizabeth Warren Doing?) Now would be the time to not take money from a college student who can’t even afford to buy a happy meal. Instead, she’s keeping the grift going.

I suspect Warren drops out after she flops again in Nevada, but who knows? She may keep this scam going for a while yet. It doesn’t seem to bother her and that probably has something to do with the current collapse of her campaign.
