The sheer amount of irony here is hard to grasp.

The Washington Post has continually defended the Obama administration’s abuses of power during the 2016 election. In fact, we just learned today that the FBI is now admitting to sending a covert agent (i.e. spy) to target George Papadopoulus. The details aren’t even really in doubt anymore. Despite that, we’ve gotten every excuse in the book and not once has the Post ran a news story that does anything but obfuscate and deflect from what happened.

Now, all the way in (checks notes)…mid-2019…they are finally concerned that a President might use Federal authority to target a political opponent. You can’t make this stuff up.

The 2020 election is going to be ugly in many different ways. If you thought Donald Trump ran a rancid campaign when he was trying to make it to the White House, just you wait until he’s fighting to preserve his power. It has been obvious for some time that President Trump is planning to promote hatred and division, but one thing we haven’t yet focused on is how he will use the resources of the federal government to make sure he wins reelection.

Yeah, he might even have the FBI spy on his opponents. Wouldn’t that be crazy?

We got a hint of it Wednesday when Attorney General William P. Barr testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) asked Barr, “Has the president or anyone at the White House either asked or suggested that you open an investigation of anyone?”

Barr reacted as though she had asked him to calculate the speed of light in nanometers per second in base 8. He sputtered a bit, asked her to repeat the question, repeated it himself, then gazed off into the distance, prompting Harris to say, “It seems you’d remember something like that,” which indeed you’d think he would. After musing for a moment on the nature of word “suggest,” Barr gave no answer.

Which suggests the strong likelihood that the actual answer is “yes.”

Wait, you think Trump might have the DOJ/FBI to open an investigation into the opposing party’s candidate and use the FISA system to gather information on them? Well, that would just be unprecedented.

But in this case, the Times acknowledges the story’s provenance right in the headline: “Biden Faces Conflict of Interest Questions That Are Being Promoted by Trump and Allies.”

Regular readers will know that I’m hardly Joe Biden’s biggest fan, but this story seems particularly weak in its implication that Biden did anything remotely wrong. What it comes down to is that, as vice president, he advanced Obama administration policy by pressing Ukraine to fight corruption, a perfectly worthy goal shared by lots of countries.

So the story here isn’t that Biden threatened Ukrainian officials to stop investigating a company his son worked for. No, the story is that “Trump and allies” are promoting the news. How exactly are Biden’s actions “pressing” Ukraine to fight corruption anyway? Sounds pretty much like the opposite.

So get ready. Trump is going to order the Justice Department to launch an investigation of his opponent — probably more than one — and Barr will likely do so eagerly. It doesn’t matter how trivial the substance is, as we learned in 2016 when the fact that Hillary Clinton used the wrong email became the dominant issue of the campaign.

You mean like the Obama administration did or are we still pretending that Strzok saying the investigation was being run through the White House isn’t proof they were involved? I also love the line about Hillary simply using the wrong email. Oh, that’s all it was? It wasn’t that she setup a private server and illegally trafficked in classified material to avoid FOIA transparency. She just accidentally signed into the wrong account or something. Got it.

I’ll stop there so as not to violate fair use rules, but the entire thing just keeps going on like that.

The Washington Post is an absolute joke and this article is pure projection. It’s basically a one to one comparison of everything the Obama administration did while asserting that it’s actually Trump that will do all those things.

The real truth is that people like this author are not actually concerned with Federal overreach. They are just concerned someone they oppose might use it. When it’s a Democrat, they are all for the FBI investigating opponents and running informants against their campaign. Now that the shoe is on the other foot as far as power goes, they suddenly want the rules to go back to what they were.

Perhaps they should but it’s still worth pointing out the laughable hypocrisy on display here.
