Seemingly, not a day goes by without Democratic Socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani saying something anti-American, or threatening the wealthy, or offering up insane Marxist solutions to the city’s problems.
Now, he’s causing outrage for his explanation of why rape numbers are rising. It’s not because there’s a problem, he argued, it’s because the law called “Rape Is Rape,” signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in 2024, expanded the definition of the crime and caused numbers to surge.
The measure updated the definition to include several nonconsensual sexual acts that you would have thought would have fallen under the definition in the first place.
Although it’s true that such a move would cause a change in statistics, it’s notable how little compassion Mamdani, who is widely considered to be anti-police, shows about the trend:
During an interview with PIX11 News, reporter Dan Mannarino asked Mamdani about New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin's concerns over rape and felony assault numbers within the city…
"And what I think is important to know is a lot of the increase in rape also comes from an expanded definition of what counts as rape, as well as survivors coming forward for acts that took place years prior," Mamdani said. "And we are thankful for them coming forward, the courage and the bravery it takes, but just to provide New Yorkers with that context."
Mamdani's comments on the "expanded definition of what counts as rape" surprised some of his critics. While Mamdani's defenders online said he was merely providing context and wasn't downplaying the seriousness of the crime, others called out what they viewed as his dismissal of the upswing.

Not surprisingly — and oh so deservingly — Zohran faced immediate backlash for what many thought was his attempt to minimize a horrible crime that often targets women and children. I’m surprised to write this, but it was a Democrat who led the charge in calling him out: New York City Council member Susan Zhuang. She wrote:
Expanding the legal definition of rape was an important step toward recognizing more survivors under the law.
But it should never be used to deflect from the responsibility to reduce sexual violence. Survivors deserve leadership, action, accountability, and justice. They don’t deserve deflection.
Former college swim star turned women’s advocate Riley Gaines was not amused:

“No wonder these guys had no problem with Platner,” quipped conservative columnist Jim Treacher.
The problem with politicians telling us crime statistics are coming down is that for many of us, that's not what we’re seeing with our own eyes. I live in LA, where they say everything’s hunky dory, but a quick walk through the rampant homeless encampments will convince you otherwise, as will the surge in home invasion robberies.
President Trump has placed a priority on crime, and it’s paid off in places like Washington, D.C. But when Democrats spout off about these great numbers when there are suffering victims out there, they often seem inhuman as they gloss over the harsh realities and tell you that what you're witnessing isn't happening.
Mamdani certainly doesn’t look like he gives a damn in this interview, that’s for sure.
Editor’s Note: New York City is now facing the consequences of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s socialist takeover.
