Judge Jeanine Pirro has only been in the role of U.S. Attorney for D.C. since May 14, but already she’s faced with a serious tragedy after the horrific assassinations of a young couple outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. Thursday night by a crazed antisemite.

As we’ve reported, Elias Rodriguez flew in from his hometown of Chicago, ambushed Israeli Embassy staffers Yaron Lischinsky (30) and Sarah Lynn Milgrim (26), and fired 21 rounds even as Milgrim tried to crawl away in terror.

The two were reportedly set to get engaged next week. It’s an almost unimaginable crime.

On Thursday, Pirro announced that Rodriguez may pay the ultimate penalty (as he absolutely should):

What we know:

The suspect is 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez. He was taken into custody Wednesday night and Pirro said his first court appearance wrapped up Thursday afternoon. Rodriguez will remain in custody and a preliminary hearing is now set for 1 p.m. on June 18.

Rodriguez has been charged in D.C. District Court with the murder of foreign officials, causing death through the use of a firearm and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. He is also charged with two counts of first-degree murder under the D.C. criminal code. He could face the death penalty, Pirro said.

Pirro said the community is rocked by the inhumanity of the attack:

We will hold accountable anyone who inflicts harm on our families, our neighbors, the citizens of our nation, or the visitors to our great capital city. We are united in that purpose, and we hold strong against those whose reckless actions claim as victim any part of our community.

Words are hard to come by when you read the unconscionable details of this attack. The death penalty is more than warranted here; unfortunately, it's not enough and won't bring this young couple back.

The hate that has been allowed to grip this country—often minimized and even promoted by the left—has now, as anyone who was paying attention could have predicted, resulted in a horrible tragedy.

As CNN contributor Scott Jennings said Thursday, "The violent war on Western civilization emanates from the radical left. Make no mistake - it is here right now, and we cannot look the other way."
