It was a heck of a night in Washington DC Tuesday as Donald Trump took to the podium in Congress to deliver his first major address as the 47th president. There were multiple riveting moments, and while Trump reveled in his administration’s accomplishments, the Democrats sat stone-faced, held obnoxious signs and created disturbances.
But Trump was undeterred and brought news of a stunning update on the disastrous 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal—the United States had captured the top planner behind the gruesome Abbey Gate attack:
President Trump revealed Tuesday in his speech to Congress that the U.S. had taken custody of an Afghan involved in planning the deadly 2021 suicide attack at the Kabul airport that Trump has called “the most embarrassing moment in the history of our country.”
Muhammed Sharifullah, described as a senior member of a branch of Islamic State based in Afghanistan, was turned over to U.S. authorities by Pakistan and was being brought to the U.S. for prosecution, Trump said.
Trump vowed during his presidential campaign to hold those responsible for the bombing at the airport’s Abbey Gate to account.

Before the speech had even concluded, FBI Director Kash Patel—who was in the audience—confirmed the news on social media:
Mohammad Sharifullah is being extradited to the U.S. in connection with 2021 Abbey Gate bombing, U.S. officials told CBS News. Prior to the address, the president had spoken to the family members of the 13 Americans who were killed by the suicide bomber during the chaotic, poorly-planned withdrawal:
Earlier Tuesday he informed family members from among the 13 service U.S. members killed in the attack during a phone call that a U.S. official described as emotional. The troops were guarding the airport perimeter during the final days of the chaotic American withdrawal from Afghanistan after a two-decade war.
The bombing and other scenes of bedlam as the U.S. departed remain for many one of former President Joe Biden’s greatest foreign policy failures. As many as 200 Afghans, crowded around the gate seeking flights out of the country, also were killed in the attack. Trump, who negotiated the withdrawal agreement, has cited it as a reason he ran for president again and has vowed to hold those responsible to account.
The grim Democrats couldn’t even find the decency to clap for this news:
Democrats refused to stand or clap when Trump announced that the terrorist responsible for killing 13 service members in Afghanistan was arrested and will face justice.

The Afghanistan withdrawal will go down in the history books as one of the biggest of Joe Biden’s many failures. The Trump administration, meanwhile, has already proven many times over that he has the backs of our military in ways that the previous administration didn't—and this is just one more example.
There were many points in his historic speech, but this was as important as anything else he said.
