Climate Summit Prez: 'No Science' in Rush to Phase Out Fossil Fuels, Could Be Forced 'Back Into Caves'

The president of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) seems like an odd man for the job of creating more climate hysteria and trying to end our use of fossil fuels before we have fully developed the technologies to replace them.

His name is Sultan Al Jaber, and he’s the chief executive of the United Arab Emirates’ state oil company, Adnoc, which “many observers see as a serious conflict of interest.” You think?

He’s also said plenty of things that must surely have driven Climate Czar John Kerry and whactivist Al Gore off the deep end. Here are his remarks at a She Changes climate summit in November. She Changes climate describes their organization as “a global campaign enabling women in all their diversity, to lead equitable climate action globally,” whatever that means.

Al Jaber responded to badgering questions from an interviewer :

I accepted to come to this meeting to have a sober and mature conversation. I’m not in any way signing up to any discussion that is alarmist. There is no science out there, or no scenario out there, that says that the phase-out of fossil fuel is what’s going to achieve 1.5C…

Please help me, show me the roadmap for a phase-out of fossil fuel that will allow for sustainable socioeconomic development, unless you want to take the world back into caves.

He continued, saying what a lot of us are thinking about the issue, namely, stop the blame game.

I don’t think [you] will be able to help solve the climate problem by pointing fingers or contributing to the polarisation and the divide that is already happening in the world. Show me the solutions. Stop the pointing of fingers. Stop it.

Climate alarmists were not pleased, and several called the Sultan the worst slur they could think of: climate denier.

Bill Hare, the chief executive of Climate Analytics, said: “This is an extraordinary, revealing, worrying and belligerent exchange. ‘Sending us back to caves’ is the oldest of fossil fuel industry tropes: it’s verging on climate denial.”

Yes, but which part about it is wrong? If I notice my house has a foundation problem and will eventually need to be torn down, I don’t immediately call for the wrecking ball. I wait until I have lined up a new place to stay.

Same thing here. We can’t magically eliminate fossil fuels overnight because we simply don’t yet have an adequate replacement.

Here's the panel's full discussion:

There were many other similar reactions to Al Jaber’s stance; this one by Professor Sir David King, the chair of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group and a former UK chief scientific adviser, gives you a taste:

It is incredibly concerning and surprising to hear the Cop28 president defend the use of fossil fuels. It is undeniable that to limit global warming to 1.5C we must all rapidly reduce carbon emissions and phase-out the use of fossil fuels by 2035 at the latest. The alternative is an unmanageable future for humanity.

I see no scenario, barring a stunning scientific breakthrough, where humanity is able to phase out fossil fuels in the next 12 years. Al Jaber isn’t even against eventually turning to other power sources, he just is pointing out that it can’t be done overnight:

A phase-down and a phase-out of fossil fuel in my view is inevitable. That is essential. But we need to be real serious and pragmatic about it.

As RedState’s Mike Miller noted, the summit itself is a giant polluter:

Hypocrites: The UN's Next Climate Shindig Likely to Have Largest 'Carbon Footprint' in Event's History

John Kerry and Al Gore will drone on and on, claiming that climate change is the greatest threat to humanity even though there’s a conflict in the Middle East that could cause WWIII, a Russia-Ukraine war where one of the sides has nuclear weapons, and a Chinese dictatorship which wishes to surpass us economically and militarily.

The one thing Gore, Kerry, and their ilk probably didn’t expect was that the president of the summit would actually point out that their solutions are not feasible in the timeline they propose.
