Most Americans, as a general rule, do not often root against anything American. Even when we might be the underdog, well, that makes it even more fun if we win. Anyone who is old enough to remember the 1980 Olympic hockey game between the U.S. and Russia knows that to be true. It was so much more than a game. It was the final word on the superior culture, ideology, and way of life.
If you are a team of Americans playing any sport internationally, even if it is one we might not pay a whole lot of attention to here at home, you have to work at making your fellow Americans not care about how you do in that competition, and even harder to make them cheer your loss.
The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team has managed to achieve that rare feat. The American women were eliminated from the Women’s World Cup, being defeated by Sweden 5-4 on Sunday. While devotees of soccer might tell you that Megan Rapinoe’s missed penalty kick, which gave Sweden the win, was bad for a host of mechanical reasons (bad approach, bad angle, overshooting the goal, etc.), maybe there is another reason. One that is identified by many different names, but for these purposes will be known as karma.
We all know that old saying about karma, and whether Rapinoe and her teammates realize it, they were handed a healthy dose, and social media was filled with Americans who cheered their loss. Rapinoe’s shanked penalty kick was also, a resounding statement on the liberal woke ideology that Rapinoe and many of her teammates champion, Rapinoe herself has become more famous for woke activism than her actual athletic ability.

The biggest thing that the left and the woke mob continually fail to understand, or miss, is business. When your antics begin to threaten the bottom line, those that run the business begin to care less about your cause. Megan Rapinoe first gained national attention when she knelt on the sidelines before a game while the national anthem was being played in a show of solidarity with then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. While Megan Rapinoe still enjoyed being employed, Kaepernick opted out of his contract with San Francisco and has not played in the NFL since. Kaepernick appeared to become a walking loss of revenue to any NFL team that might sign him.
Another miss for the lefty wokesters, is groupthink. At some point, it will come back to bite them. There are some who may put up with it for a while, but ultimately, most people, when faced with the threat of it, will tell the woke bullies, let’s call them what they are, to go pound sand. Hope Solo is a former goalkeeper for the U.S. Women’s Soccer team and a former teammate of Megan Rapinoe. Solo has said, “I’ve seen Megan Rapinoe almost bully players into kneeling because she really wants to stand up for something in her particular way.” The woke crowd also misses the fact that bullying can work in two ways. What if one of those players was vehemently pro-life, and insisted Rapinoe support her cause? Chances are we would have never heard about that kind of “bullying.”

And almost always, the woke, like Rapinoe, miss the bigger picture. She has come out in favor of biological men playing women’s sports. First of all, quite a convenient stance to take just prior to announcing your retirement, and therefore not having to deal with competing against biological men yourself. Secondly, not being able to understand that by allowing men in women’s sports, every achievement since the passage of Title IX, which ironically, allowed her more access to play collegiate sports, is slowly being erased. Men will also take spots on women’s teams, therefore keeping more girls and women in the future from those spots and perhaps living out their dreams as Rapinoe herself has had the luxury to do.
At its heart liberalism and being woke is not about others, it is selfishly, all about them. And Megan Rapinoe is no exception. After choking on what could have been the winning goal for her team, she was seen smiling and laughing. Her reason,
“I mean this is like a sick joke. For me personally, this is dark comedy, that I missed a penalty. That’s why I had that smile on my face. I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be f—ing kidding me.’ I’m going to miss a penalty? I mean, honestly, I can’t remember the last time I missed.”
Be it irony, or karma, Rapinoe has not missed a penalty kick in five years. Better get used to it, Megan. Your liberal woke ideology is going to continue to miss too.
