A Republican-majority state Senate in Ohio has joined with the determination of their colleagues in the statehouse in voting to override Republican Governor Mike DeWine's veto of a measure that would create new rules on how transgender athletes can compete on sports teams, and ban the use of "gender-affirming care" for any minor in the Buckeye state.

The Republican-dominated Senate voted Wednesday to override GOP Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto. The new law bans gender-affirming surgeries and hormone therapies, and restricts mental health care for transgender individuals under 18. The measure also bans transgender girls and women from girls and women’s sports teams at both the K-12 and collegiate level.

The override cleared the chamber 24-8 mostly along party lines....

The sole Republican to vote "nay" on the override was state Sen. Nathan Manning, who represents deep-blue Cuyahoga County. The law is expected to take effect in 90 days.
