The man who once ruled the United States Senate with an iron grip has died.
Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid died Tuesday at the age of 82.
Reid, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2018, served in Congress from 1983 until his retirement in 2017. He announced in 2019 his cancer was in remission.
The Democrats’ current Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, remembered Reid in a statement on Twitter late Tuesday, calling him “one of the most amazing individuals I’ve ever met”:
Harry Reid was one of the most amazing individuals I've ever met
He never forgot where he came from and used those boxing instincts to fearlessly fight those who were hurting the poor & the middle class
He’s gone but will walk by the sides of many of us in the Senate every day pic.twitter.com/8T9PiD7vY4

Former HUD secretary and San Antonio mayor Julian Castro also shared his thoughts on Reid’s passing:
Harry Reid taught us all how to campaign with conviction, govern with guile, and fight like hell for what you believe in.
My thoughts go out to his family—and to the people of Nevada, who have benefited tremendously from his work. pic.twitter.com/4VwpXADXRk
