'Whiteness' Expert Helps Caucasians Cancel Their 'Inner Becky' and Shoulder Blame for Each Other

If you’re white, you’ve got to work to do — people are put upon by your pigment, and you might be a Becky.

So figures a professor.

OregonHumanities.org has announced a February 15th seminar at the Salem Public Library by Willamette University Professor Emily Drew on reconciling one’s evil inflicted by his or her melanin level.

The event’s title: “Conversation Project: Working on Our Whiteness.”

The “our” makes sense, as Emily herself is white. She’s predisposed to cause damage, but she’s battling it:

Amid today’s social uprisings, many white people have become acutely aware that racism shapes our communities in Oregon and beyond. Many of us have also begun realizing how poorly our experiences have equipped us to make sense of these times, and we have many questions. Join Emily Drew in a conversation that asks, How can we who are white show up as more effective and less damaging participants in struggles to interrupt racism in our community?

White people are typically burdensome to the world around them; a fix is tricky…

How can white people engage in efforts to dismantle racism in ways that do not reproduce or place unfair burdens upon people of color to be our teachers?

Accept blame for the actions of similarly-shaded others, and do the work:

This conversation is for white people to reflect together on what it means to “do our work” as white people, which includes taking responsibility for one another, educating ourselves, and coming to view other white people as our partners — not competition — in developing antiracist identity.

For those unfamiliar with “antiracism,” UCLA Law Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw previously provided a definition to Good Housekeeping:

“Antiracism is the active dismantling of systems, privileges, and everyday practices that reinforce and normalize the contemporary dimensions of white dominance. This, of course, also involves a critical understanding of the history of whiteness in America.”

Over the past few years, whiteness has taken quite the torching. Yet, efforts to incinerate it appear to be increasing — as if the need continues to grow. Some might conclude that the more it’s accosted, the more curmudgeonly it becomes. Whether or not that’s true, our whacking at whiteness forges on:

Back to Oregon, Willamette Professor Emily “teaches courses about racism, race and ethnicity, immigration, and social change,” per the announcement.

Her primary areas of research involve understanding how race and racism operate inside of institutions. She earned her PhD from Loyola University Chicago and publishes her research on institutionalized racism in academic journals. … She…serves as a co-trainer of “Understanding Institutional Racism” workshops for Crossroads Anti-Racism Organizing and Training. She works as a strategic planner with public school districts, universities, and community-based organizations across the country…

As noted by The College Fix, Emily also assists white women in their efforts to not be a “Becky”:

Drew is a regular speaker on how white people need to become better people. For example, she gave a talk at another Oregon library in 2018 titled “Challenging Our Inner Becky: Interventions of White Women-ness in Our Community.” “Becky,” like the name “Karen,” is used as a stereotype against an overbearing or annoying white woman.

“My hope was to attract people who already knew racism was a problem, probably had a critique of the kinds of people who do racism,” [she] told a local newspaper. She wanted white people to “turn the mirror on ourselves and look at how does that same stuff live in us?”

How, indeed.

Hopefully, with Emily’s assistance, America’s 250+ million white people will purge themselves of inherent pale perniciousness.
