Inclusivity is all the rage, and M&M’s is in on the action. In honor of all being involved, the candy has released a new color.
Fox News reports:
For the first time in a decade, a new M&M’s character is making its debut and joining the iconic candy cast.
Mars, Inc. introduced the Purple M&M’s character Wednesday.
Woke though it may be, the DEI update defies our current climate — in lieu of a nonbinary newbie, the addition is full-on female.
If eyelashes are the only anatomical distinction between guys and gals, then call Poison Control — even after Ms. Purple’s inclusion, the multi-colored button-shaped chocolates are still teeming with toxic masculinity:
- Purple – Female
- Green – Female
- Brown – Female
- Red – Male
- Orange – Male
- Blue – Male
- Yellow – Male
Still, as the ongoing question goes, “What is a woman?” Perhaps Green, Blue, and Yellow will soon denounce their sex assigned at birth. And maybe one of those last two will adopt “they/them” pronouns.
M&M’s already updated its gender profile once this year.
From The Hill in January:
Mars, Incorporated, the company behind the colorful, candy-coated chocolates, announced Thursday a “global commitment to creating a world where everyone feels they belong and society is inclusive.”
As part of the new mission to increase the “sense of belonging for 10 million people around the world by 2025,” Mars said the M&M’s characters — who serve as mascots of sorts for the brand — would be receiving fresh, new looks.
The green M&M, previously seen in ads posing seductively and strutting her stuff in white go-go boots, will now sport a pair of sneakers. A description for the green candy on the M&M’s website says she enjoys “being a hypewoman for my friends.”
“I think we all win when we see more women in leading roles, so I’m happy to take on the part of supportive friend when they succeed,” the green M&M said on the promotional site.
Another character, the brown M&M, described her motto as, “Not bossy. Just the boss.”
RedState front-pager Jennifer Oliver O’Connell wasn’t won over:
This is sheer ridiculousness. … Does anyone think they are trying neuter womanhood here? I’m a sneaker girl myself, but why snip away at a mostly feminine preference, and dare I say, asset? I am straight, but I can admire a woman in high heels, and it doesn’t diminish me that a majority of women love them, even if I don’t. Why is Mars, Incorporated now diminishing them?
RedState Editor-at-large Kira Davis was similarly disenchanted :
[S]omething bothered me about this obviously urgent social update of a popular snack. No, it’s not the idea that we’re discussing a chocolate candy in terms of its gender and sexual nature. Obviously the Green M&M is the hot one. What bothered me is the idea that every time corporate or bureaucratic America wants to make something more “inclusive,” it always involves de-feminizing women. It’s as if, in order to become “inclusive,” a woman must exclude the hallmarks of her gender. Male representations still get to include all of those hallmarks. Sure, “inclusive” might mean adding some makeup or a skirt, but masculine representations often remain. They simply are added to the “softer” representations.
The candy has also hit headlines another way — see “Firefighters Rescue M&M’s Factory Workers Who Got Stuck in a Giant Vat of Chocolate.”
At the time, that story got upstage by one in the same vein but substantially less sweet:

Back to edible inclusivity, Purple’s release is no soft rollout. She’s coming on strong with her own song. And I must admit, it’s pretty impressive:
Good for her. Hopefully, no one tells her she’ll soon end up in the aforementioned outhouse. So goes inclusivity.
