Well, this is weird.

Remember Sinead O’Connor?

She’s the chick who went on SNL in 1992, performed a song, then tore up a picture of the Pope and declared, “Fight the real enemy!”

She denigrated the Catholic wing of the largest religion in the world. Bold move. If you were Catholic, she didn’t care what you thought. She didn’t mind committing what you perceived as heresy. She had the guts to unapologetically offend you, to overtly insult your holy faith:

Crrrrrrrickets.

Then, she appeared at a concert in New York. Evidently, the Catholics in the audience didn’t much appreciate her recent denigration; they expressed that fact by booing. Suddenly, the woman who fearlessly offended millions ran off stage crying.

If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out. Here she is, not taking it:

Guess she wasn’t so tough after all.

Her song “Nothing Compares 2 U” (written by Prince) had gone to #1 in 1990, followed by the hit “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.” With one move insulting a sizable portion of the planet, she killed her career.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, years later, O’Connor admitted she suffered from bipolar disorder and suicidal thoughts. She even appeared on Dr. Phil to talk about it. Guess she did want what she didn’t have, after all.

Too bad she wasn’t able to remain relevant; she would’ve loved the Catholicism-lampooning 2018 MET Gala (here).

But maybe relevancy is back, Jack! Now Sinead has a new reason to make headlines. And something new that’s she’s gotten. Here’s her tweet from last week:

“This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada.'”

Wanna hear her sing a Muslim song? You’re in luck, buddy!

No word yet on how her Muslim faith fits in with her support for abortion or her stance against oppression, given that many would say Islam is oppressive to women (Hirsi Ali certainly does — here; but Linda Sarsour contends otherwise — here).

I’ll give her credit, though, for fighting oppression in one way that would surely fit her newfound Muslim faith (asserting opinions with which I agree) — her 2013 open letter to Miley Cyrus, which included this: 

“Yes, I’m suggesting you don’t care for yourself. That has to change. You ought be protected as a precious young lady by anyone in your employ and anyone around you, including you. This is a dangerous world. We don’t encourage our daughters to walk around naked in it because it makes them prey for animals and less than animals, a distressing majority of whom work in the music industry and it’s associated media. …I repeat, you have enough talent that you don’t need to let the music business make a prostitute of you. You shouldn’t let them make a fool of you either. Don’t think for a moment that any of them give a flying f*** about you. They’re there for the money. We’re there for the music. It has always been that way and it will always be that way. The sooner a young lady gets to know that, the sooner she can be REALLY in control. …Real empowerment of yourself as a woman would be to in future refuse to exploit your body or your sexuality in order for men to make money from you. I needn’t even ask the question. I’ve been in the business long enough to know that men are making more money than you are from you getting naked. Its really not at all cool. And it’s sending dangerous signals to other young women. Please in future say no when you are asked to prostitute yourself. Your body is for you and your boyfriend. It isn’t for every…dirtbag on the net, or every greedy record company executive to buy his mistresses diamonds with.”

According to a Telegraph article, Muslim women are required to keep their hair long. O’Connor told Dr. Phil she’d never grow hers out. Will she thrive under the confining rules of her new religion or decide she has to “fight the real enemy” again? Also, in the past, she’s worn her share of tank tops; when the summer heat comes, I guess we’ll see if Nothing Compares 2 a Burqa.
