Since James Comey was sh**canned by President Trump, he’s developed a Twitter presence of sort. His schtick is finding Bible verses or aphorisms that he thinks are appropriate to current events and tweeting them. Imagine Forrest Gump doing political commentary and you have an idea of what its like.

Last evening, when it became obvious that the administration was going to release the House Intelligence Committee memo, Comey tweeted this:

All should appreciate the FBI speaking up. I wish more of our leaders would. But take heart: American history shows that, in the long run, weasels and liars never hold the field, so long as good people stand up. Not a lot of schools or streets named for Joe McCarthy.

This is just bizarre.

I sort of expect this inability to comprehend from devoted anti-Trumpers. The memo is either significant or it isn’t. If it isn’t, the only people hurt are Nunes and his colleagues. The memo is either true or false. If it is false, the FBI can easily disprove it and the only people hurt are Nunes and his colleagues. The memo either documents abuses of FISA the FBI or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t the only people hurt are Nunes and his colleagues.

On the other hand, if any part of it is true, the American people are better off for knowing about it and the Congress and the White House have a duty to the nation to ensure the malefactors are roasted alive and we are allowed to line up to pee on their ashes chastised and the system made compliant with our civil liberties.

There are, indeed, liars and weasels out there. They would be the people who claimed the White House didn’t know of the Clinton decision in advance when we have documentary evidence that is false. They would be the people who sandbagged an investigation into the Clinton Foundation. They would be the people who sandbagged an investigation into how classified documents ended up on Anthony Weiner’s laptop. They would be the people who decided Hillary Clinton wouldn’t be prosecuted two months before she was interviewed. They would be the people who leaked classified documents to a friend to try to create a demand for a special counsel. They might be the people who suddenly hire that friend as their attorney so he can’t be questioned. They might even be the people who promoted the Trump dossier and used it for FISA warrants.

And while there isn’t much named after Joe McCarthy, there is a building in DC named after J. Edgar Hoover. And you know what’s in there, right?
