Now This, Folks, Is Real Journalism

Remember the name Nick Shirley. You'll be seeing it again. This admirable young man, possessing quite a bit more than the usual get-up-and-go, has blown open the scope and scale of Somali-run welfare fraud in Minnesota.

Nick Shirley documented alleged fraud involving daycare centers in Minnesota in a nearly hour-long video that exposed various centers as empty, decrepit, and with no kids in sight. Millions are being taken in at these facilities. Where are the kids? The video went viral, leading to a federal response. Yesterday, the Health and Human Services ceased all child care payments to Minnesota until the fraud allegations are resolved.

Now, in Washington, Cam Higby is showing us some pretty compelling evidence that the same thing is happening in this Left Coast state.

In Washington, Cam Higby also did a report exposing apparent daycare fraud, where houses are listed as daycare centers, licensed as such, but they deny being such locations. They may look nice on the outside, but it’s the Klopeks, but Somali-style. One ‘daycare’ center received over $210,000 this year. Watch what happens when they knock on the door.

The video opens with Cam describing one encounter:

My decoy went up, and she could hear people rustling around on the other side of the ring camera as if they were listening to her, but not responding.

Discovery Institute's Jonathan Choe was also on the scene in Washington; in that same video, he describes a similar experience - except that they actually had someone respond.

Questioner: Hey, is this the Dhagash Childcare?

Respondent: No.

Q: It's not the Dhagash Family Childcare?

A: No.

Q: OK, what's the name of the child care here?

A: (illegible.)

The entire report bears watching.

Here's the thing: It is people like Cam Higby and Nick Shirley who are blowing all this wide open. They are actually doing what reporters used to do: Actual, no-Schiff, shoe-leather journalism. This is how it should be done - go out, find the people, knock on the door, and put out the raw, unedited results.

If we relied solely on the legacy media for this kind of reporting, we'd still have suitcases full of American currency being carried back to Somalia, now and for years to come. The legacy media, print, online, and every other form, had better get wise, or they are going to become more and more irrelevant.

This may already be happening, at least at CBS, where their new Editor-in-Chief, Bari Weiss, has been knocking some heads together. But boy, howdy, most of the old media have some big hills to climb if they want to regain any of the reputation they may have once had. They've gotten away with blatant, obvious, and unrepentant leftist bias since before Watergate. That's had some positive results, of course, in the rise of the alternative media, an example of which you're reading right now.

For now, though, if it's the straight goods you want, unfiltered and raw, look to the young guys like Nick Shirley and Cam Higby. They are where it's at right now.
