Speaking as RedState's most popular and best-looking Alaskan correspondent (I'm also RedState's only Alaskan correspondent), I admit to a little embarrassment over the continued presence of Princess Lisa Murkowski as one of our senators. I have always given Princess Lisa credit where credit's due; she is a survivor, with her cobbled-up coalition of Anchorage and Juneau Democrats and squishy Republicans that keep sending her back to Washington. Our ill-advised ranked-choice voting scheme also helped her to win her last election, and if we don't undo that mistake, it may help her win again.
Now, I don't much care for the term Republican in Name Only (RINO) as it's too often used to mean "Any Republican who disagrees with me on any given issue." But in the case of Senator Murkowski, boy, howdy, does it ever apply. As evidence, I offer that Princess Lisa has once again been censured by a branch of the Alaska Republican Party.
On Thursday, Alaska Republican Party District 26 (Wasilla) convened and voted in favor of a resolution to censure Sen. Lisa Murkowski. The resolution, charging Murkowski with a series of offenses against core GOP principles, was formally adopted and will now be forwarded for consideration at the State Republican Central Committee meeting on Saturday.
The district had sent the charges to Murkowski and given her time to respond, but did not hear back from her.
You don't say. But the Wasilla group is not the only one heaping opprobrium on our RINO senator:
This action follows a growing trend across the state. Earlier this year, a Kenai district committee unanimously passed a censure resolution, citing Murkowski’s repeated criticism of former President Trump, endorsement of Democratic candidates (notably support for Mary Peltola in 2022 and 2024), resistance to Trump’s nomination of Pete Hegseth for defense secretary, and her advocacy for ranked-choice voting, viewed by Republicans as a direct conflict with their platform.
Since then, at least seven other districts have followed suit, supporting similar resolutions demanding sanctions. The Valley Republican Women of Alaska also passed a similar resolution condemning Murkowski.
She's been censured already at the state level as well:
This is not the GOP’s first move to formally rebuke Murkowski. In January 2021, the State Central Committee itself voted 77 percent in favor of censuring her, officially cataloging actions such as her public call for Trump’s resignation and her impeachment votes among the catalysts.
So, one might ask, how does she survive?

As I've said before, Alaska is an odd place, politically. Yes, Republicans heavily outnumber Democrats in the Great Land; as of March 2025, there were 149,581 registered Republicans to 76,040 Democrats. But there are 273,195 independents, which gives us a breakdown of 12.6 percent Democrats, 24.32 percent Republicans, and 44.41 percent independents. Alaska is one of only nine states in the Union with a majority-independent electorate.
There are also 116,362 voters registered in the various third parties, making up 18.92 percent of the electorate. (I know that adds up to 100.25 percent, which I assume is a rounding error somewhere.) The only state with a higher proportion of third-party voters is Louisiana, with 27.85 percent. Alaskans are an independent lot, and our elections (sometimes inexplicably) prove that out.
And, as I mentioned, Lisa Murkowski is a survivor. She has her coalition, and when combined with ranked-choice voting, which she supports, she's pretty safe in her seat, censures or no. The censures have to sting, but if Alaska's GOP wants her gone, two things have to be done: First, repeal ranked-choice voting. Second, find a stellar candidate.
Meanwhile, we still have Princess Lisa Murkowski to kick around. Here, watch the censure proceeding, or, rather, listen; there's only an image of an empty chair, which seems appropriate:
