Diplomacy, at times, is the art of saying, "Nice doggie, nice doggie," until you can find a rock. Israel has a history of this kind of diplomacy, but if they had a rock in their hand, they have been asked to kindly set it down and go on saying, "Nice doggie." Speaking on Wednesday in the White House, President Trump confirmed that he, shall we say, advised Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu against striking at Iran.
The president has his reasons.
🚨 BREAKING: Trump just confirmed he told Israel to not attack Iran.

REPORTER: Did you warn PM Netanyahu against taking action against Iran?
TRUMP: "Well...yes, I did."
"I did. Yeah."
"I said, I don't think it's appropriate right now."

The president, during the question-and-answer period, replied to questions about the matter:
Reporter: Back to Iran. Did you warn Prime Minister Netanyahu against taking some sort of action that could disrupt the talks there, in a phone call last week?
President Trump: Well, I like to be honest. Yes, I did. Next question, please?
Reporter: (inaudible) Senate Republicans want to put...
President Trump: It's not a warning. I said I don't think it's appropriate.
Reporter: What exactly did you tell him?
President Trump: I just said I don't think it's appropriate. We're having very good discussions, and I said I don't think it's appropriate right now. Because if we can settle it with a very strong document, very strong, with inspections, and no trust. I don't trust anybody. I don't trust anybody. So, no trust. I want it very strong, where we can go in with inspectors, we can take whatever we want, we can blow up whatever we want, but nobody getting killed. We can blow up a lab, but nobody's going to be in the lab, as opposed to everybody being in the lab and blowing it up, right? Two ways of doing it. Yeah, I told them this would be inappropriate to do right now because we're very close to a solution. Now, that could change at any moment. It could change with a phone call. But right now, I think they want to make a deal, and, if we can make a deal, and save a lot of lives.
There have been indications, as recently as last week, that Israel may be planning an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.
The US has obtained new intelligence suggesting that Israel is making preparations to strike Iranian nuclear facilities, even as the Trump administration has been pursuing a diplomatic deal with Tehran, multiple US officials familiar with the latest intelligence told CNN.
The history of Western nations making deals with Iran has not been a happy one.

President Trump is correct in insisting that there be no trust between the United States (and any other parties) and Iran. If there is one thing to be learned from dealings with post-1979 Iran, it is that they will lie, they will cheat, they will hide their operations, and they will never, ever be forthcoming. Iran is a large enough place to make it easy enough to simply move weapons development facilities - in the Zagros Mountains, perhaps, or in the East Iranian Range, near the borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan. Pakistan, of course, is already a nuclear power.
There is an awful lot of rough, bad countryside in which Iran could hide any number of facilities.
There's an old saying: the way to build trust is first to admit that trust does not exist. But with Iran, as long as the mullahs are in charge, there can be no trust, and even verification will not be easy or cheap.
President Trump seems very sure that a deal is in the making. Maybe it will work this time. But if a deal is made that we can be certain will shut down Iran's nuclear program, it will be the first such deal since the 1979 revolution.
