President Trump Unloads on James Comey After '86 47' Incident: 'He's a Dirty Cop'

The James Comey "rocks on the beach" saga is still unfolding, and President Trump has made a rather forceful statement. In an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier, the president expressed what seems to be the prevailing sentiment: That Comey knew exactly what he was doing.

And, in typical Trump fashion, the president had some pointed things to say about Comey's career.

The interview:

President Trump: He knew EXACTLY what that meant. A CHILD knows what that meant. If you're the FBI director and you don't know what that meant? That meant assassination.  And it says it loud and clear. Now, he wasn't very competent, but he was competent enough to know what that meant. And he did it for a reason, and he was hit so hard, because people like me they like what's happening with our country. Our country has become respected again, and all this, and he's calling for the assassination of the president.

Bret Baier: Obviously he apologized and said he disavowed calling for violence...

President Trump: Look, he's a very bad...

Bret Baier: What do you want to see happen?

President Trump: I don't want to take a position on it because that's going to be up to Pam (Bondi) and all of the great people. But I will say this, I think it's a terrible thing, and when you add his history to that, if he had a clean history. He doesn't. He's a dirty cop. He's a dirty cop.  And if he had a clean history, I could understand if there was a leniency. But I'm going to let them make that decision.

President Trump, we should remember, knows a thing or two about assassination attempts, so, understandably, he's a bit tetchy on the topic.

A rational look at this issue casts a lot of doubt on Comey's claim to have just happened across these rocks on this stretch of beach; that's stretching the bounds of what we can write off as coincidental. Comey's antipathy towards President Trump is well-known, and the most generous we can be about this is that James Comey tried a silly trick on an Instagram account that seems mostly intended to sell his book. He tried to pander to the people most likely to be interested in what he had to say; he likely arranged those rocks himself to that very end, although, of course, we have no way of proving that.

But, as you will have noted from our previous coverage (links below) the FBI and the Secret Service will be speaking with him about it.

Actions have consequences, or as the popular saying these days goes, "fool around and find out." Comey, in a moment that was probably meant to be a casual shot at the president, fooled around. Now he's going to find out. Don't expect any jail time, as that would require evidentiary proof that he aligned the rocks himself with the intent to provoke someone to action, instead of it being what it was - a stupid, careless moment and an expression of overweening partisanship. But James Comey faces some uncomfortable times in the next few days or weeks, and boy, does he have it coming.
