That's Actually Racist. DOJ Looking Into Minnesota DA Urging Considering Race in Plea Bargains

Remember when equal treatment under the law was still a thing? Hennepin County, Minnesota County Attorney Mary Moriarty doesn't. She is instructing prosecutors to consider race when determining possible plea deals, which is not only against the principle of equal treatment under the law, but is also actually racist.

Attorney General Pam Bondi, Acting Associate Attorney General Chad Mizelle and Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon informed Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty in a letter that the Justice Department is opening a probe into whether the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office "engaged in a pattern of practice of depriving persons of rights, privileges or immunities secured or protect by the Constitution or laws of the United States."

The letter, dated May 2, cited Moriarty’s recently adopted "Negotiations Policy for Cases Involving Adult Defendants," which instructs prosecutors to consider race when formulating plea offers, stating that "racial identity… should be part of the overall analysis," and that prosecutors "should be identifying and addressing racial disparities at decision points, as appropriate."

"In particular, the investigation will focus on whether HCAO engages in illegal consideration of race in its prosecutorial decision-making," they said in the letter, which Dhillon shared on X.

Mary Moriarity has drawn scrutiny before; my colleagues Nick Arama and Bob Hoge have each documented various malfeasances by this "progressive" county attorney.

More Minnesota Madness: Left-Wing Prosecutor Wants to Know This About You Before Negotiating Deal

It's ironic how, whenever the left accuses the right of anything, it's almost always something the left is actually doing. In this case, a leftist county attorney is not only implementing racist and discriminatory policies, but she is instructing prosecutors who report to her to do likewise. She is directing these prosecutors to consider race - an immutable and skin-deep characteristic - in any possible plea deals, and to treat members of some racial groups better or worse than others, based on that criterion.

That's actually racist. It's also shameless pandering by a county attorney who took office on the heels of the George Floyd riots.

This isn't the first time she has been accused of prosecutorial favoritism.

Last month, Republicans across the North Star State condemned Moriarty for failing to charge a Walz staffer who allegedly vandalized at least six Tesla vehicles. President Donald Trump's administration has identified Tesla vandalism as "domestic terrorism" and led a nationwide effort alongside the Justice Department to hold vandals accountable.

Justice is supposed to be blind. People are supposed to be treated by the system of justice equally, with only their acts being evaluated, tried, and judged - not their melanin content, not their religious beliefs, not their socioeconomic status. But Mary Moriarity, aptly carrying the name of a Sherlock Holmes villain, believes that prosecutors should consider race in making plea deals.

This is deeply and fundamentally anti-American; it flies in the face of everything this nation is supposed to be. All people, treated equally under the law, regardless of race, sex, or anything else.

Then again, this is the end of the political spectrum that cannot define the simple word "Woman," so...
