On Wednesday, the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas ended not with a bang but with a whimper, when the Senate under Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) dismissed both impeachment articles without a trial. Sen. Schumer stated that the House of Representatives had sent to the Senate “the least legitimate, least substantive and most politicized impeachment trial ever in the history of the United States.” Oh, the irony!

Predictably, the White House wasted no time in praising the move.

The White House on Wednesday praised the Senate for dismissing two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, reiterating its stance that the effort was baseless. 

“Once and for all, the Senate has rightly voted down this baseless impeachment that even conservative legal scholars said was unconstitutional,” said Ian Sams, White House spokesperson for oversight and investigations.

The move on Wednesday shut down the possibility of a lengthy Senate trial, which Republicans had demanded to bring attention to the Biden administration’s record on immigration and border security.

Sams went on, and this is the real head-scratcher:

President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas will continue doing their jobs to keep America safe and pursue actual solutions at the border, and Congressional Republicans should join them, instead of wasting time on baseless political stunts while killing real bipartisan border security reforms.

By "actual solutions," Sams evidently means "We will do nothing, and keep the floodgates open to all and sundry." By "actual solutions at the border," he presumably means "we will keep flying people in, keep the borders wide open, and continue burdening our major cities with housing and feeding millions of people who are in the country illegally."

The Mayorkas Impeachment Trial That Wasn't: How Senate Democrats Torched Precedent 

Here's the onion:

The White House has consistently called the impeachment proceedings baseless, unconstitutional and politically motivated and slammed House Republicans who voted in February to impeach Mayorkas, arguing that history will not look kindly on those lawmakers.

In peeling back these eye-watering layers of horse squeeze, we can easily see the translation of this statement from political-speak to English:

Baseless? No, the border is a disaster, our cities are crumbling financially from the burden, and millions of people are in the country illegally, many of them unaccompanied, military-aged men. We have little or no idea who many of them are, where they intend to go, or what they intend to do when they get there.

Unconstitutional? On the contrary, the House was doing its constitutional duty when faced with a Cabinet-level official who is plainly incompetent; add to that the fact that most of the White House staff, including President Biden, apparently couldn't discern the difference between the United States Constitution and a 1934 Sears, Roebuck catalog.

Politically motivated? Since when is it a political issue to be concerned with millions of unidentified, unscreened people flooding illegally into the United States, and a Homeland Security Director whose every action seemed determined to keep the taps open?

This act by the Democrat-controlled Senate is no surprise. It should be - but it isn't. In any principled deliberative body, one that was actually concerned with the good of the nation and not just of one political party, Mayorkas would have been cashiered in the time it would take to say "You're fired." 

But there are no principles involved in this case. It's been decades since Sen. Schumer was within shouting distance of any actual principles--if indeed he ever has been. If the shoe was on the other foot and a Republican appointee for Director of Homeland Security was similarly inept, there can be little doubt that Senate Democrats would be shouting from the rooftops for impeachment.

But in this, as with so many things in Washington, D.C., these days, it's not about principles, it's about politics - it is the priorities of The Side above all.
