Save the Penguin!

At a Capitol Hill media event staged by Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), Progressive Democrats met with environmental activists to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Alaska National Wildlife Reserve. As per usual, these earnest protectors of the flora and fauna of the virgin Alaskan coastal plain did so with the reverence and dignity so commonly associated with Progressive politics.

Oh, and did I mention their devotion to science? We’ve come to expect no less from Markey, outgoing chair of the now-defunct House Select Committee on Global Warming. (That’s the Pelosi committee that incoming Republican leadership has punted into the cheap seats…)

National Review Online has the story.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a number of the attending liberal activists (though no members) are clad in polar bear and penguin garb. “Iconic animals,” Markey beamed.

“Iconic”, Rep. Markey? Maybe you meant “ironic”, since penguins don’t inhabit the Alaskan coastal plain, and never have. In fact, the nearest penguin in the wild would have to swim, oh, about 10,000 miles to visit ANWR:

Penguins are found only in the Southern Hemisphere. While most people associate penguins with Antarctica, they are much more widespread and penguin populations can also be found in South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.  [Source.]
