President Trump is in Michigan today at Macomb Community College, celebrating the fact that his first hundred days have gone off like gangbusters. As I mentioned yesterday in a preview of what the president will be talking about, his coming back to Macomb County for this celebration makes a lot of sense because this county pretty much won the whole state for him back in November of 2024.
From said article:
El Presidente 47, Donald John Trump, is returning to Michigan and Macomb County, home of the famous Reagan Democrats, to speak to his supporters in the county that almost delivered all of the 80,000 votes he won the state by in 2024. Trump won Macomb County by almost 70,000 votes, which gave him a comfortable lead to take the whole state by a larger margin than he did in 2016.

Trump always has a great turnout for the events here, and from reports of people that I know who are there early, it is not any different this time around.
This article is not just about the president coming back to the state of Michigan that he won in 2024 and thanking the people of this county who helped put him over the top, but about a congressman from Michigan who is trying to get some airtime.
My colleague Bonchie covered this yesterday:
On Monday, Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) released a video claiming that Trump must be removed from office and that "Kilmar Garcia must be allowed to return," referring to an alleged illegal immigrant gang member who was deported to his home country of El Salvador. To say the entire thing was weird would be an understatement. I thought this was a "Saturday Night Live" skit at first. I'm not kidding.

Yes, it was very weird, but welcome to Michigan politics.
Bonchie followed up with this question...
What are you doing, Michigan? This is who you are sending to Congress?
The congressman has no shot of getting this taken up during this Congress, and even if he did, it would never pass the Senate with 67 votes. We went through this rigmarole during Trump's first term, and there's not a groundswell of support for bringing back somebody who entered this country illegally and was sent back to his home country.
That is pure fantasy, and it is fun to watch.
However, there is a part of this story that is much more serious.
With the president in town, the people who help organize this event, namely the Michigan GOP, should be taking a step back after this event and wondering what needs to be done to protect the gains that have been made in the first hundred days and whatever else will happen before the election in November 2026.
So far, the Michigan GOP is still in a rebuilding mode, which I and others who watch politics in this state acknowledge and are well aware of. The new Michigan GOP Chair Jim Runstead has a formidable job ahead of him and is going to need help from the Trump administration to help right the ship as soon as possible before the campaigns get rolling next year.
The campaigns have already started.
Some of the hate and vitriol that I have seen aimed at some of the more well-known names running for governor and the United States Senate have me honestly scratching my head. Primaries are supposed to be tough, and you definitely want to go through and have people with a similar mindset have a vigorous debate and discussion, which will only strengthen the candidate who wins in the general against the Democratic opponent.
Going back to Bonchie's question, which essentially asked what is wrong with Michigan?
It's simply a blue state.
Donald Trump will never be on the ballot again so for the midterm elections next year everything is going to have to hit damn near perfectly and the people who want to succeed Governor Whitmer and Gary Peters are going to need the support of anyone who believes Trump deserves to have GOP control of Congress going into the last two years of his administration.
I can't state it any simpler than that.
So enjoy the first hundred days and the rest of the year with Trump 2.0. I sure hope the people who are in charge of laying the groundwork for 2026 are actually paying attention.
