Bill Maher is becoming a must-watch every Friday night on his show “Real Time With Bill Maher” over at HBO for one clear reason and one reason alone.
He is willing to piss people off, and it is one of the few places on cable where it is done well. Pissing people off, I mean.
This is truly no small feat in today’s cancel culture world, and whether or not you agree with what he is saying, you should support his right to do it.
My colleague Alex Parker covered what Maher said on his show last Friday in a piece earlier today called Bill Maher May Have Just Delivered His Most Conservative Monologue Ever. From Alex’s post…
“Watching the [events] go down in Afghanistan, I was reminded lately of every conversation I’ve ever had with an immigrant, almost all of which…included the notion, ‘Oh, you people have no idea. All you do is…badmouth your own country. But if you knew about the country I came from, you’d stop [condemning] your own.'”
I covered this last year in a piece I wrote here at Red State called Comics Like Ricky Gervais, Dave Chappelle and Bill Burr are Saving America. From that article…
Dave Chappelle with his blistering special on Netflix called “Sticks and Stones” opened up the assault last year and my other colleague Brandon Morse wrote about that here… Dave Chappelle’s Audience Reviews are In, and the People Made It Clear that the Critics are Very Wrong. I would also add to the mix another comedy special on Netflix called “Paper Tiger” by Bill Burr which came out right after Chappelle’s and was equally as vicious ( funny) as “Sticks And Stones” was.
Ricky Gervais opening last night is just the latest in what I hope is finally clap back on the whiners and moaners in all sectors of our society that feel that THEIR opinion is the only one that should be heard or taken into account. “HOW DARE YOU” has become the mantra of these people if you don’t agree with their short-sighted, mindless point of view and they will try to shut you down and ruin you. They have invaded our schools, workplaces and for a while, it seemed the last refuge for scoundrels and defenders of the 1st amendment.
Comedians and comic clubs.
Ricky Gervais last night made it clear he did not care if he was leaving money on the table attacking the very people that could make or break his “future” career. He did what all great comedians do, he attacked the sacred cows in America and in that room and it was marvelous to watch. His jab about Harvey Weinstein and everyone in the room being friends with him and then calling them all perverts was every bit as impressive as his end shot that everyone is talking about. Also, did you hear the slap at not doing a Memoriam about those who have passed because those that died were not diverse enough? BRILLIANT!!
The reason why I bring up comics pushing back on the #woke nonsense of today is that if we are to begin unwinding and pushing back on this feeling over everything else malarkey, those who tell jokes for a living will need to lead the way. Most of them slept while this neo-fascist, thought police crap crept into our society. Now that people like Maher, and others that are popular like Dave Chappelle, Bill Burr, and Ricky Gervais, are willing to point and laugh, we should follow their lead.
Because you know the left hates it when people laugh at them. Good lord, do they hate it. How dare people laugh at their obvious smugness and ‘smarter than thou’ assertions.
Now, I do not give a flying rat’s you-know-what if Maher and others are left of center from me. A lot of my friends do not see the world as I do, and I have no issue with that. I mock them for it and vice versa.
In Maher’s “New Rules” segment that Alex had in his article above, Bill poked fun at John Boehner — and it was spot on and FUNNY. The former speaker of the House did seem to cry a bit much, and it was mostly eye-roll worthy. I truly expected him to turn on the eye sprinklers at the thought of a red, white, and blue popsicle melting without being eaten.
As I talked about on my show on WAAM Radio 1600 A.M. & 92.7 F.M. in Ann Arbor, Michigan, earlier today, Bourbon on the Rocks, WAAM Radio Edition: Sunday, August 29th, 2021 this country is in trouble, and it is gut-check time. If we want to improve things here, then one of the ways to do it is to mock stupidity. Whether that stupidity comes in the form of left, right, or center political ideology.
As Maher pointed out in his show, a comic was killed by the Taliban for being a comic, and it is time to crush the seeds of this destructive mindset now. Also, the louder those getting hit squeal, turn up the barrage, and crush the #woke protection being offered today.

Also, remember to not be afraid to laugh at the sacred cows that people today say can’t be touched. You will feel better.
