President Donald Trump continues kicking off the 2020 campaign this Thursday in Michigan where he visits Macomb County which helped him win in 2016. Michigan was one of the three states along with Pennsylvania and Wisconsin that helped put Trump way over the electoral vote number he needed.

President Donald Trump will be back in Michigan on Thursday, his first stop in the battleground state during the 2020 election year.

Trump will deliver remarks at Dana Incorporated, an auto parts supplier in Warren on Thursday, the White House has announced. The event will take place a day after Trump is expected to sign the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, Trump’s replacement for the North American Free Trade Agreement, according to national media reports.

Trump won Michigan by 10,704 votes in 2016 — his closest margin of victory in any state over Democrat Hillary Clinton. The state remains a battleground, and many Democratic presidential hopefuls have campaigned here after Democrats won all statewide offices in the 2018 election.

Macomb County helped drive Trump over the top by just over an 11 point margin or 48,000 votes over Clinton in 2016, yet flipped back to voting for a Democrat Governor two years later by four points. The county has been a bellwether for how “blue-collar” voters will treat Republicans on the national and state tickets. During the ’80s the county earned the nickname of being the home for the “Reagan Democrats” and it lived up to it.

That Trump is making his first appearance in 2020 in the county that helped him take the state is not surprising. The Metro Detroit area is still heavily reliant on the automotive industry and the signing of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement the day before will be a perfect place for him to come do a victory lap.

Contrary to the belief of many Trump supporters online the President is not a shoo-in to win Michigan or the other two states he surprisingly won in 2016. The rust belt, like the rest of the country lovingly refers to us is not locked into one political party. While the economy is booming there is no reason to just assume people will go out and vote for you. Particularly just because of the fact that you belong to Facebook groups with people who all think like you. I can’t tell you how many Trump supporters I go back and forth with that think this is a done deal.

Do you know who else thought they were a shoo-in for winning an election? Hillary Clinton.

Trump and his reelection team realize how important this county and state are it shows with this visit not even a month into the new year. This is a really good sign if you are all on board with Trump 2020 and a great move while the Democrats are still sniping at each other in Iowa and New Hamshire.
