How conflicted are Trump supporters and #Resistance members, right now?
Trump’s devotees, on the one hand, have held Trump up to be the virtuous icon of all things conservative, rightwing, and constitutional – like the Second Amendment and the rights of gun owners.
On the other hand, rabid leftwing nuts have labeled Trump the scourge of decent and rational humanity – a barbarian, who doesn’t care if children are shot in schools or in their homes.
And standing off to the side are actual, principled conservatives, who knew that a liberal, lifelong con artist with absolutely no mooring in any sort of principle or decency could be trusted to live up to the cult-like standards of his base.
And we’re laughing our heads off.
As Caleb Howe pointed out earlier, Trump revealed his true nature today, when he took up the Democrat talking point regarding the NRA and accused Republican members of Congress today of “being afraid” of the NRA.
That’s right. If you ever heard Democrat gun-grabbers and the activists backing them say the Republican party is in the pocket of the NRA, President Trump just doubled down on that sentiment.
He’ll become the darling of the #Resistance, yet. Somebody alert Alyssa Milano.
That wasn’t all Trump revealed about his true nature today, and it may not have been the worst of it.
During today’s meeting, Vice President Pence made the case for making it easier to report and locate potentially dangerous individuals and confiscating their weapons.
“Allow due process so no one’s rights are trampled, but the ability to go to court, obtain an order and then collect not only the firearms but any weapons,” Pence said.
More government makes things better.
Ok. My big concern with that is how vetting reports will be done. How easily could it go wrong, left to the competence of the federal government?
(Yes, I used the words “competence” and “federal government” in the same sentence – I know how ludicrous that is.)
I suppose that’s something that could be pounded out.
Then, Trump chimed in, in response, and this is what should have clear-headed, true patriots clutching their pocket Constitutions a little tighter tonight:
“I like taking the guns early like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida … to go to court would have taken a long time,” Trump said at a meeting with lawmakers on school safety and gun violence.
“Take the guns first, go through due process second,” Trump said.
Due process second.
We know what Nikolas Cruz was, but any president that openly advocates gun grabbing and “due process second” is not just a liberal social justice nightmare, but has the dangerous mindset of a dictator in the making.
Republicans who voted for this man have been duped.
Those who still vigorously defend him, even as his mask is slipping, are delusional.
