I am not upset by this, and I applaud the move.
“If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.” – Psalm 137:5-6 NIV
In the wake of President Obama’s breathtaking betrayal of Israel, in refusing to veto a U.N. resolution, aimed at making Israel’s settlements along the West Bank and in east Jerusalem illegal, this is a positive move in the right direction.
GOP Senators Marco Rubio (Florida), Ted Cruz (Texas), and Dean Heller (Nevada) have introduced a bill to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and would recognize Jerusalem, officially, as Israel’s official capital.
Republican Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas), Dean Heller (Nev.) and Marco Rubio(Fla.) introduced the Jerusalem Embassy and Recognition Act shortly after being sworn in to the new 115th Congress.
“Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish state of Israel, and that’s where America’s embassy belongs,” Rubio said in a statement. “It’s time for Congress and the President-Elect to eliminate the loophole that has allowed presidents in both parties to ignore U.S. law and delay our embassy’s rightful relocation to Jerusalem for over two decades.”
“Jerusalem is the eternal and undivided capital of Israel,” Ted Cruz said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the Obama administration’s vendetta against the Jewish state has been so vicious that to even utter this simple truth – let alone the reality that Jerusalem is the appropriate venue for the American embassy in Israel – is shocking in some circles.”
Senator Heller has suggested that some State Department funds would be withheld until the relocation began.
The dispute over Jerusalem as capital to Israel often centers around allowing Israel and Palestine to settle the matter between themselves. It’s really hard to have substantive conversations with a people who deny your right to exist, however.
Palestine and their Hamas leadership have long cited that peace will only come when there is no more Israel, which makes the move to punish Israel by the United Nations all the more disgusting.
Jerusalem was split between Israel and Jordan from 1948 until 1967. In 1967, though, Israel took Jordanian-controlled East Jerusalem in the Six-Day War. Nevertheless, the U.S. has continued to recognize Tel Aviv as the nation’s capital.
“I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; They shall never hold their peace day or night.
You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent, And give Him no rest till He establishes
And till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” – Isaiah 62:6-7 NKJV
This move is in line with what President-elect Trump has expressed, and is equally in line with Trump’s choice for the ambassadorship to Israel, David Friedman.
