The Trump Economy: The January Jobs Numbers Are 'Unexpected'

The period economic reports throughout the Age of Trump are ALWAYS downplayed by the legacy media. The jobs numbers in particular generally exceed the expectations of Democrat-oriented economists and are frequently reported as “unexpected.” It’s what they do – grudgingly downplay the good news as best they can in service of the Democrat Party.

Before we get to the January jobs report, here are a couple of excerpts on the state of the US economy from the President’s State Of the Union (SOTU) address Tuesday night:

  • The unemployment rate for African-Americans, Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans has reached the lowest levels in history

  • African-American youth unemployment has reached an all-time low.

  • African-American poverty has declined to the lowest rate ever recorded.

  • The unemployment rate for women reached the lowest level in almost 70 years, and last year women filled 72 percent of all new jobs added.

  • The veterans’ unemployment rate dropped to a record low.

  • The unemployment rate for disabled Americans has reached an all-time low.

  • Workers without a high school diploma have achieved the lowest unemployment rate recorded in U.S. history.

  • A record number of young Americans are now employed.

  • Under the last administration, more than 10 million people were added to the food stamp rolls.

  • Under my administration, 7 million Americans have come offfood stamps and 10 million people have been lifted off of welfare.

With the above as backdrop, here are the January jobs report numbers from a Yahoo News report.

The U.S. economy added a better than expected 225,000 jobs in January, with warmer weather during the month helping boost hiring even in a persistently tight labor market.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.6%, and average hourly earnings growth accelerated over last year.

Here were the main metrics from the Department of Labor’s January jobs report, compared to consensus expectations compiled by Bloomberg:

  • Change in nonfarm payrolls:+225,000 vs. +165,000 expected and +147,000 in December

  • Unemployment rate: 6%vs. 3.5% expected and 3.5% in December

  • Average hourly earnings month on month: +0.2% +0.3% expected and +0.1% in December

  • Average hourly earnings year on year: +3.1% +3.0% expected and +3.0% in December

Virtually statistics reported by the Dept of Labor beat expectations! What will those numbers be in future months when the benefits of USMCA and the first phase of the recently-signed China trade deal kick in? What do the Democrat presidential candidates have to offer on the economy? An absurd thought.

While we’re touching on some numbers, here are some polling numbers from a recent Gallup poll that should put more shivers down the spines of the Pelosi-Schumer Democrats:

Americans’ views on their personal financial situation have been climbing since 2018 and are now at or near record highs in Gallup’s trends. Nearly six in 10 Americans (59%) now say they are better off financially than they were a year ago, up from 50% last year.

The current 59% of Americans who say they are better off financially than they were a year ago is essentially tied for the all-time high of 58% in January 1999.

In addition to U.S. adults’ highly positive report on their current financial situation, Americans are also expressing peak optimism about their future personal financial situation. About three in four U.S. adults (74%) predict they will be better off financially a year from now, the highest in Gallup’s trend since 1977.

I force myself to watch CNN and MSNBC a bit these days in order to see what the leftwingers are saying. Everything is about the Democrat primaries, Democrat presidential candidates, and Trump hatred – 24×7! Yesterday, they were all caterwauling over the reassignment of LTC Vindman (and others) from the National Security Council in a planned downsizing action. But not even a whisper about the great economy or the January jobs report. I can’t remember the last time either of those networks reported a scintilla of a good news story for President Trump. An alternate universe if there ever was one!

In the meantime, the Trumpian economy keeps chugging right along while the President works for all the people (even those on CNN and MSNBC).

The end.
