Yesterday, DC police reported that one of their officers had been involved in a duty-related shooting of a Black teenager. Police officers had received a 911 call from a citizen concerned about a number of young men with guns. The address indicates that there was a better than 50-50 chance that the caller was also Black and so we can rule out the infamous “racist 911 call” trope. When police officers arrived on the scene, the young men tried to flee and one of them was shot and died at the hospital.

The dead man is 18-year-old Deon Kay. And, sure as clockwork, the death has caused a protest.

Thanks to some quick action by DC’s MPD, this may never take off. They laid out all the events:

MPD is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on 9/2/20 in the 200 block of Orange Street, SE in which an officer shot at 18 year-old Deon Kay after he brandished a firearm at responding officers.

And now they’ve released a narrated version of the bodycam of the officer who fired the shots.

If you go to 3:05 in the video, what appears to happen is that Kay an one other individual are being pursued by a police officer. They run up on the officer who does the shooting and Kay raises a pistol. The officer shoots.

But, race-baiting grifters are going to be true to form. This, if you don’t recognize the name, is the same guy trying to make bank off the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha which now looks like it will end up with Blake getting a long prison term instead of a 8-figure settlement from a lawsuit.

There is also a video circulating which is purported to be that of Kay’s Instagram page. I’m not posting it because of the lack of provenance at this time. If it is legit, it adds a lot of context to the whole incident.

In a sane world, this is unfortunate but there is exactly one person to blame for Deon Kay being dead. Deon Kay. There is no evidence, however, that this is a sane world.
