This story is just breaking and CNN is the only source so it may turn out to be substantially false. But here it is:
An FBI official is under criminal investigation after allegedly altering a document related to 2016 surveillance of a Trump campaign adviser, several people briefed on the matter told CNN.
The possibility of a substantive change to an investigative document is likely to fuel accusations from President Donald Trump and his allies that the FBI committed wrongdoing in its investigation of connections between Russian election meddling and the Trump campaign.
The finding is expected to be part of Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s review of the FBI’s effort to obtain warrants under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act on Carter Page, a former Trump campaign aide. Horowitz will release the report next month.
Here’s what we can take away from this.
The campaign adviser is pretty obviously Carter Page.
If Horowitz’s report found one instance of document falsification, you can nearly bet the system is broken to the core.
It is almost certain that the Steele Dossier plays a role in this as that was the major evidence in the Carter Page surveillance.
The real story is who the lead reporter is for the story: Evan Perez. Perez was a wholly-owned, or at least leased, subsidiary of FusionGPS and stories were fed to him to further the Russia hoax. He also has received a lot of stories from within the FBI and CNN has an unusual number of prominent faces with FBI backgrounds.
If you read the pullquote carefully, you’ll see CNN’s big concern is not abuse of the surveillance apparatus but rather it “is likely to fuel accusations from President Donald Trump and his allies that the FBI committed wrongdoing in its investigation of connections between Russian election meddling and the Trump campaign.”
That’s why CNN is out in front of this. Keep an eye on this story. CNN and its handlers in the FBI are going to try to shape the narrative going into the Horowitz report unveiling that the FBI did everything right and by the book but there were a few bad apples and…Look! Squirrel!
It looks like a funeral is happening right now on @CNN. They’re so hurt that @realDonaldTrump was right. Their whole narrative is starting to implode. Even now they’re more concerned about the fact this is a colossal win for Trump than they are with what could amount to treason. pic.twitter.com/6kila6FUxu
