Citing health reasons–he just had surgery to remove a growth on a kidney–Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson announced that he would retire from the Senate at the end of this year.

Isakson’s term does not expire until 2022 but, because there is an election in 2020, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp appointed replacement will only serve until a new election is held.

I’m not a follower of Georgia politics but the shock to me was this:

I would have thought Ms.-I-wuz-robbed would have killed people to take a shot at proving her electoral might in a fairly open race.

This is something that the GOP didn’t really need in what could be a tough year for the GOP Senate caucus. David Perdue is up for reelection this year and Isaakson’s resignation puts both of Georgia’s senate seats in play next November. The Democrats think they smell blood in the water. Three Democrats are already vying to opposes Perdue and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution speculates that the top contenders are Rev. Raphael Warnock, the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church; Jon Ossoff, a former candidate for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District; Jason Carter, the runner-up for governor in 2014; and Michelle Nunn, who was defeated by David Perdue in the 2014 Senate race.
