Yesterday, President Trump got his first primary challenger for 2020. Former Massachusetts governor and 2016 Libertarian party candidate for Vice President William Weld threw his hat in the ring. Naturally, he chose CNN and Jake Tapper as his medium for announcing his candidacy:

"Jake, I'm announcing that I'm running for President… as a Republican against the President in 2020."

It is hard to see what Weld’s competitive advantage is or why he even thinks that he should receive serious consideration. One can’t help but notice that the hotbed of Never Trump, The Bulwark, where they are all about the hard work of conserving conservatism (or they were until recently, now their tagline reads “The Noise Causes Cancer”), ignorned his announcement. If Bill Kristol, Tom Nichols, and Rick Wilson can’t jump on the bandwagon of someone opposing Trump on “principles” then there is precious little hope for them.

Let’s look at Weld’s history.

Abortion. He’s a hard core pro-abort.

In 1996, Governor Weld ran against liberal, pro-abortion Senator John Kerry (D-MA) for the U.S. Senate. Senator Kerry voted to uphold President Clinton’s veto of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act. Governor Weld said that he would have voted the same way as his opponent. “It’s a terrible procedure and I wish that it would never occur, but I would have voted the same way.” (Boston Herald, 9/9/96)

He has likened President Trump’s immigration enforcement effort to Nazi Germany.

He actively pushed for homosexual marriage while governor of Massachusetts.

Under Weld’s leadership, the GOP caucus in the Massachusetts Senate went from 16 to 7 and the Massachusetts House declined from 37 to 28. He actually makes Mitt Romney look like a party-building superhero by comparison.

He endorsed Barack Obama over John McCain in 2008.

He was Gary Johnson’s number two in 2016.

I don’t know what the problem is that Weld thinks that he can cure, but all evidence indicates that the cure Weld proposes is much more deadly than the disease.
