The Senate race in Florida is tight but polling indicates that Florida Governor Rick Scott has a small lead over incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson. If one was betting one would have to give the nod to Scott simply because an incumbent governor, like an incumbent president, has a lot of levers to pull and buttons to push to aid his campaigning that aren’t available to a rather slow moving and semi-comatose senator.

In a move that fairly reeks of flop sweat, Nelson went public with a claim today that the evil and godless Russkies have “penetrated” some “voter registration systems” in Florida.

Russian operatives have “penetrated” some of Florida’s voter registration systems ahead of the 2018 midterms, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson said Wednesday, adding new urgency to concerns about hacking.

The state, however, said it has received “zero information” supporting his claim.

“They have already penetrated certain counties in the state and they now have free rein to move about,” Nelson told the Tampa Bay Times before a campaign event in Tampa. He said something similar a day earlier in Tallahassee but declined to elaborate.

“That’s classified,” the Democrat said Tuesday.

Even if this story is true, so what? Penetrating a voter registration system lets you do two things only. You can add voters and you can delete voters. If you add voters, someone has to show up to vote for them. As we know from history, only one party brings in fake voters…and it ain’t Rick Scott’s. If you delete voters, they have a legal right to vote a provisional ballot. Precinct judges will immediately notice if there are an unusual number of provisionals, plus voters will be pissed about the inconvenience. There are backup and archived versions of the voter file so it is no big deal to determine if they have been tampered with and a quick search can verify that provisional ballots are legitimate. As a backup, the county elections board can use tax records and utility records to verify residence.

All Nelson is doing is creating an excuse. If he loses, he’s going to blame Russian interference. There will be a lot of it this year and we can thank the Resistance and Never Trump for giving Putin that kind of influence on our elections.
