Deputy Scot Peterson Decides He's Not Going Under Sheriff Israel's Bus Without a Fight

For a week now we’ve been feasting on the succulent reputation of Broward County Sheriff’s Deputy Scot Peterson. He’s the school resource officer who has been fingered by students and by his boss for lacking the huevos to do anything about an ongoing school shooting other than cower in a stairwell.

Now Deputy Peterson has retained counsel and his lawyer tells quite a different story.

I’m not going to pretend to be an authority on police tactics. Not my thing. I was trained to move to the sound of the guns and I’m not sure what he thought was happening when he heard multiple gunshots from around the building. But, because he puts this in writing, I have to assume he followed standard procedure. In the interview Coral Gables PD Sergeant Jeff Heinrich gave, he says another off-duty officer was with him and that officer had an extra ballistic vest and a rifle. Heinrich borrowed the vest and a pistol. That matches up with Peterson’s story of a guy with a rifle being there.

In activating his high-powered Blame-O-Matic, Sheriff Israel seems to have stirred up a hornet’s nest. You can bet your bottom dollar that if Peterson is telling the truth we’re going to start hearing a lot more ugly stuff about the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
