A lot of the commentary on the firing of FBI Director has focused the ongoing investigation into alleged “collusion” between members of the Trump campaign and alleged members of Russia’s FSB/SVR during the 2016 presidential campaign. The actual firing of Comey was justified by his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation.
This is the justification letter on page 4.
Regardless of your politics, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that Comey made a complete dog’s breakfast of the Clinton email investigation. That has left both sides of the political aisle viewing the FBI as subservient to the ruling party rather than as an impartial law enforcement agency. Many on my side, like me, for instance, are convinced that if we had handled classified information in the way Hillary Clinton handled it, we would not have received a mere scolding and our minions would not have been given immunity deals. The left is convinced that Comey re-opening the investigation cost Clinton an election in which she won the popular vote.
The Deputy AG’s assessment is correct. No matter what strengths Comey has, he has forfeited his credibility which, at this time, is coin of the realm.
It is difficult to see why anyone concerned about the Trump/Russia investigation is worried about this in the least. The guy leading the FBI right now is Andrew McCabe. He is a dyed in the wool Democrat and his wife ran for a state senate seat in Virginia and received a $700,000 contribution from Hillary Clinton. If Trump though he was hindering that investigation, firing Comey was the wrong action to take.
