Donald Trump Surrogate Paul LePage Didn't Really Say That, Did He?

Yesterday, I posted on the antics of Maine Governor and Donald Trump Surrogate Paul LePage. LePage, it seems, got his panties all scrunched up in a tight little role over a member of the state legislature questioning LePage’s commitment to racial equality after he declared that 90% of all drug dealers in Maine were black or hispanic. He left  a profanity laced tirade on the man’s phone and opined that it was too bad that Code Duello was a thing of the past.

Now he’s blazed new territory in race relations.

On Friday, LePage was attempting to defend Maine law enforcement against allegations of “racial profiling.” Any valid point that he had was more than offset by his presentation:

Look, a bad guy is a bad guy, I don’t care what color he is. When you go to war, if you know the enemy, the enemy dresses in red and you dress in blue, you shoot at red, don’t you? Ken, you’ve been in uniform [ed comment, I’m sure Ken, whoever he is, made himself very scarce at this point.] You shoot at the enemy. You try to identify the enemy. And the enemy right now, the overwhelming majority right now coming in are people of color or people of Hispanic origin. I can’t help that. I just can’t help it. Those are the facts.

So because an alleged majority (and I have seen no data that either confirms or refutes LePage’s assertion about the race and ethnic makeup of “90%” of drug dealers) are black or Hispanic then the police are entitled to treat everyone in that “uniform”, to repeat LePage’s analogy, as the enemy? That is a scary thought.

This all goes back, though, to two themes that we have posted on, day after day, here at RedState.

First, Donald Trump collects idiots the way Velcro collects lint. That is who he hires. Where many of the idiots he’s collected were mild mannered and mostly harmless ciphers in their pre-Trump lives, their association with Trump has acted on their latent idiocy the way steroids act on a cancerous tumor. What has been a tightly controlled impulse suddenly metastasizes and becomes a 800-lb ball of luminous, effervescing idiocy.

Second, I don’t know Trump. I don’t know what is in his Grinch-like heart. What I do know is that he has attracted racists and bigots to his campaign in a way I would never have thought possible. He encourages them. He validates them. He inspires them.

LePage, it seems, is a two-fer in this regard.
